Certainly does. I just had a friend visiting, he was continually stunned at the beer prices. Up to about £6 for pints of local beer and £8+ for run of the mill imported stuff at some bars he was taken to in the city.

Good for us going the opposite way for holidays but that is no consolation to people moving this way. For decades we have struggled with exchange rates when visiting overseas so this is a very pleasant relief for us - one could say "about bl**dy time!"

Pints of Stella in Brunswick are around 10 dollars at present. I guess thats a local beer now though, being brewed here etc ? I suppose thats more than 6 quid as well.

How much are they in the UK ?

London Tavern, Lennox st, Richmond tonight before and after the MV game... Pints of Bulmers 9 dollars, which is their usual price.

Have a look. All personal reviews though... which might explain why the price of a pint in Mevagissey seems to be 8quid for a pint of "Piss Weak Lager"

Interesting London comes out with 3.5 quid for a pint of Stella... I guess thats 6 bucks these days... however when it was 2.5 Aud it would have been closer to 8 bucks... only 1 dollar difference at that exchange rate.

So the exchange rate is the major factor here.

Thats about 7 bucks a night, or 1 extra pint at my current drinking rate.

The beer index.

The exchange rate is a killer. For me a fair price for a pint round the normal drinking areas, i.e. North West/Midlands, i would say;

Lager p!ss £2.60

Bitter £2.20

Cider £2.70

Gunless £2.70

When i had my last beers in Brissy and Surfers before i left i paid;

Waxys Lager $8.00 pint i think, was p!ssed

The Irish bar round the corner from Union Jacks in Brissy on a Saturday night i paid $12.00 for a pint of VB

The Pig and Whistle in Brissy center $7.00 for a pint of 4XXXX i think?

At 2.5 to 1 not too bad, but Oz is no place to holiday if you are on the p!ss at the moment, feel for the barmy army, i bet they are not getting as barmy with the cost of a pint?

Keith, very sad.

Is this a tourist and temp visitors only thread or can anyone join in?

Two years ago when I arrived the exchange rate was 2.54 and a measure of my favourite tipple was $5.00. Now the exchange rate is 1.572 and my fave tipple (same tipple - I'm just two years older) is $5.20. Flamin' scandalous. I blame global warming!

The $10 grand a year pay increase I got for inflation and award increase doesnt really cover that extra 20 cents a bevvy. Which ombudsman do I write to?

That reminds me - now would be a good time to make good an old debt: my old man was good enough to put his hands in his pockets awhile back..

Hadnt checked for a while....

0.66 awesome. I remember painful days of anly getting 0.33 for my $. If this holds then I might even be able to buy a few things and eat when we head back to UK for a holiday in late 2011!
