Australian Doctors

Anyone,

What is the procedure for registering with a doctor? Obviously we have NHS doctors in the UK where you turn up when ill. Do you have to register with a local practitioner in Australia? Any advice.

Cheers

Dale :)

Re: Australian Doctors

You don't need to register with a doctor in Australia. You get a
Medicare card, and then if you need to see a doctor you just go and
see anyone you like. Some practices send the bill direct to Medicare
(bulk-billing), which is easier and cheaper for you, but that
proportion is falling. Otherwise you pay and claim part of the money
back from Medicare.

Most medical centres are open long hours, so you can see a doctor in
the evening or weekend quite easily.

Nothing stopping you going back to the same doctor regularly if you
get on with him. If not, try someone else.

It's a lot better than the UK where many GP practises will say to you
something like 'we've no appointments for three weeks ... ' or the
only times they have available are inconvenient for those who have to
work.
