More info is available on www.citizenship.gov.au . How long before you are all eligible?

A long while yet we're not even there yet, it's just that Rachel my wife read that you needed to be 18 to get citizenship. But obviously that doesn't count if your parents get it as I thought

In fact only children aged less than *16* can be included as part of a parent's application. The 2 year residence requirement does not apply to children under 16, nor does the need to attend a ceremony. They become citizens when the relevant parent attends a ceremony.

Children aged 16 or 17 must apply independently. DIMIA normally expect one parent to countersign the forms, however, unlike for younger children, they do not expect to see at least one parent who is Australian (or in the process of becoming Australian).

Hence 16 and 17 year olds are effectively adults as far as becoming citizens is concerned. They need to meet the residence requirements themselves, but can become citizens (if eligible) even if the parents don't want to.
