They don't seems to produce much except hot air and sewage - perhaps it's beautiful thoughts?

Do you know your head from your hind?

They are somewhere for the consumers to live, all together, to reduce distribution costs; and so there aren't too many people to get in the way of the farms, mines and wells (and atomic test sites).

Just think of the number of ghetto-blasters I could import with all those commodity export royalties - why, I could have a ghettos built of walls of ghetto-blasters - all to myself - and ready made holes to dump 'em in when new models became available.
