Default Which Australian Bank?

OK i've doen searches but can't seem to find one details the banks in one thread (unless i'm not looking hard enough - i'm sure someone will tell me)

We're going to Melbourne and we actually only went into ANZ while on our trip.
Though we can't seem to find the bumf we brought back now.

Ideally we want to set up a joint current and savings account (this will depend on how much it costs to have both though don't want to be paying a huge fee each month to have both)

So any comments on:

ANZ
Westpac
HSBC
Commonwealth Bank of Australia
ASB Bank
National Australia Bank

I'd really appreciate it

Thanks

Jen

try either westpac/bank of melbourne or commonwealth bank. My mrs banks with both (because she's an ozzie). most competitive is the bank of melbourne! ;-)

If you don't want to pay monthly fees, then I'd go with HSBC. We use their online savings account as our day to day account and use ING as our savings account (6.15%).

I've always had good service from St George (no affiliation etc) if you wanted to add another to the list. I also use their dragondirect for savings - it usually has amongst the best interest rates too. We dont pay fees on the current account because I have my pay deposited every fortnight.

another thumbs up for HSBC, we've had a couple of their savings accounts since arriving with absolutely no issues
we use one as a joint account and do all our day to day transactions on and another just in the wife's name for savings (to keep the taxes down )

Bank with National Australia Bank. Heaps of bramches everywhere (and you will need to go into a branch for something at some point), low all inclusive fee of $5 per month and decent interest with excellent on line banking etc. Cant fault it.

I will second ANZ. Helpful staff, good service and only bank to give us a credit card as new arrivals.

I like ANZ too. Plus if you open a ingdirect account the funds are transferred overnight. It takes 2 - 3 days with all the other banks.

Great if you're like me and have to keep your savings away from your wages but need funds pretty quickly for renovating.

We are with the Commonwealth bank and cannot emphasise what a fantastic service we have had with them - helpful, friendly staff who go out of thier way to make things easy for you.

I've been happy with HSBC but have now been waiting for four weeks to hear the result of their investigation as to why THREE chequebooks haven't arrived since 28th June.

It's too much of a coincidence to think that three on the trot have been stolen in the mail.

I say HSBC too. The Online Savings account has fantastic service, a no strings visa debit card and I haven't paid a cent in bank charges and fees since I arrived last year.

At the moment I use Bankwest for savings - 7% - but will be reverting to HSBC Serious Saver - 6.75% - when my Bankwest introductory period runs out in Feb.
