Default Australian all time Top 40

Following a recent thread on Aussie Rock I dug out an article from the Australian newspaper from a few years ago (1999 I think). They got their readers to vote for their favourite Australian tunes of all time and this was the result. And apparently they haven't done the same survey in Wales because they don't have 40 decent tunes

Excellent list! Only a couple there I cant place from just the names alone. Surprised that theres not more John Farnham in there or Chisel, what about Cheap Wine, Ita, Breakfast at Sweethearts, Standing on the Outside, CHOIRGIRL!!? No Sherbert? Surely they were worth a mention? Howzat? Or Darryl Braithwaite when he was solo? As the Days go by? Horses?

I guess there are heaps out there but I do agree with number 1, Eagle Rock is one excellent song

Great thread

Love this one:
Sounds of then - Gang Gajang

Didn't recognise it until I looked up the lyrics: sound a bit bleak, but there's something about it.

I think I hear the sounds of then,
And people talking,
The scenes recalled, by minute movement,
And songs they fall, from the backing tape.
That certain texture,that certain smell,

To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room, of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
Brings home the heavy days,
Brings home the the night time swell,

Out on the patio we’d sit,
And the humidity we’d breathe,
We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.

The block is awkward - it faces west,
With long diagonals, sloping too.
And in the distance, through the heat haze,
In convoys of silence the cattle graze.
That certain texture, that certain beat,
Brings forth the night time heat.

Out on the patio we’d sit,
And the humidity we’d breathe,
We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think that this is Australia.

To lie in sweat, on familiar sheets,
In brick veneer on financed beds.
In a room of silent hardiflex
That certain texture, that certain smell,
Brings forth the heavy days,
Brings forth the night time sweat
Out on the patio we’d sit,
And the humidity we’d breathe,
We’d watch the lightning crack over canefields
Laugh and think, this is Australia.
This is Australia etc..

Agreed When I first looked at it my first thoughts were, no Inxs, no Bee Gees, no Seekers, no John Williamson. A personal favourite of mine missing is Peter Allen's 'I still call Australia home' (some say the Qantas ad song!). Not a good one to play if you are feeling homesick though. 'I've been to cities all over this world, from New York, to Rio, to old London town; but no matter how far or how wide I roam ..........'

Yeah, some call it This is Australia. I remember Sky Sports here used it a couple of times as the introduction to their coverage of the Australian Open tennis. They have also used 'Great Southern Land' which I would have much higher up my list. Great lyrics for this song - 'Sitting at the end of an endless ocean, sitting like a runaway lost at sea etc (I think, doing from memory)

Pookin, excellent song, was used on a series of ads with them all sitting on the verandah of a beautiful queenslander, can't remember what for, perhaps beer? (XXXX?)

Ahh yes no INXS! Very surprising. Was just looking at the list with hubby, lots of others missing too like Olivia, Helen Reddy, & what about Slim! LOL But then we thought that perhaps it was rock only, that would explain why some are missing but INXS should be there.

I Still Call Australia Home is one of the few songs that can bring a tear to my eye, love it

some real classics there...so my ozzy girlfriend tells me but they do nothing for me im afraid.

as for the welsh bands, we have some of the finest bands/music in the world.

Super Furry Animals
Manic Street Preachers
Stereophonics
Catatonia
Gorky's Zygotic Mynci

to name a few.

btw i went to see the phonics at morfa stadium a couple of years ago and they absolutely rocked.

Khe Sahn! Cold Chisel Number 4 on the list.

I left my heart to the sappers round Khe Sanh
And my soul was sold with my cigarettes to the blackmarket man
I've had the Vietnam cold turkey
From the ocean to the Silver City
And it's only other vets could understand

About the long forgotten dockside guarantees
How there were no V-dayheroes in 1973
How we sailed into Sydney Harbour
Saw an old friend but couldn't kiss her
She was lined, and I was home to the lucky land

And she was like so many more from that time on
Their lives were all so empty, till they found their chosen one
And their legs were often open
But their minds were always closed
And their hearts were held in fast suburban chains
And the legal pads were yellow, hours long, paypacket lean
And the telex writers clattered where the gunships once had been
But the car parks made me jumpy
And I never stopped the dreams
Or the growing need for speed and novacaine

So I worked across the country end to end
Tried to find a place to settle down, where my mixed up life could mend
Held a job on an oil-rig
Flying choppers when I could
But the nightlife nearly drove me round the bend

And I've travelled round the world from year to year
And each one found me aimless, one more year the more for wear
And I've been back to South East Asia
But the answer sure ain't there
But I'm drifting north, to check things out again

You know the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Only seven flying hours, and I'll be landing in Hong Kong
There ain't nothing like the kisses
From a jaded Chinese princess
I'm gonna hit some Hong Kong mattress all night long

Well the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
Yeah the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
And it's really got me worried
I'm goin' nowhere and I'm in a hurry
And the last plane out of Sydney's almost gone
