Default Australia - Would It Suit Us?

Introduction: Please excuse the longevity of this post, although I've tried my best to design it to be skim-read as easily as possible. Although I have begun looking into Canada, the following points describing virtually everything I am looking for in my life have led some BE members in the Canadian folder to recommend Australia, and more specifically Melbourne as a possibly better destination. Thus, I'm looking to get opinions of all you Oz people now .

I realise that much of the following may also sound very 'dreamy'. However, I decided there is nothing to lose in writing about a 'dream life' other than a couple of minutes of my time.

About Us: I am currently studying for a Quantity Surveying degree with one year (after the current one) left. My girlfriend is studying French & Italian languages. We're both in our (very) early 20's and looking to emigrate from the UK within the next couple of years.

Over the next year or so we will be heavily looking into the options available to us and once we're happy with the research on a set destination(s), we'll look to go over to the relevant areas/cities to experience the life for ourselves.

Reasons for Leaving the UK:

1) One of the primary reasons for me is the current uncontrolable status of immigrants flooding past our borders. The UK welcomes everyone and anyone which obviously is causing problems. I carry much admiration for countries such as Australia, among others, for being selective with who they give residence to and who will bring with them the most benefit. It is these 'closed' borders that I am looking to be within if they allow me to cross and give me the life I am looking for...

2) The rainy and often miserable weather. My girlfriend has arthritis and the moist climate over here often aggravates her joints making her hurt and feel larthargic.

3) Overcrowdedness and rising prices in terms of housing as well as most other consumer goods.

4) I always hear stories about people having everything they ever dream of (mountains for skiing and riding, lakes for sailing, incredible wildlife) on their doorstep. All the UK seems to offer is crime, stress and mass-commercialisation.

What We're Looking For Abroad: (in rough order of preference)

A) Following on from my degree, I am looking to work in the construction industry (not manual labour though due to wanting a greater salary and being business orientated). Although I would be happy with many roles connected to Quantity Surveying, my ambition is to start a property construction and property/land management business. Currently, I can only speak for myself in terms of careers as my girlfriend does not yet know what career to pursue.

B) Somewhere SAFE but already well populated and established so that there is little chance of boredom and depression many 'returning to the UK' members seem to speak of.

C) Real seasons! Snow in the winter and hot sunshine in the summer is key. Although I personally do not like excessive heat thus the North wouldn't be an option for us. In terms of the winter season, what's the skiing like in Australia? Plenty of snow? Where?

D) We lead a healthy life style therefore love good food & a variety of it. Nice cheeses are a must for me anyway haha ! We also have a small dream of growing much food (mainly veg) ourselves although attending something along the lines of a famers market every now and again would suffice. Finally, we both enjoy cooking and creating everything from cakes to our everyday meals from scratch therefore being able to do this easily without being constantly faced with highly processed 'foods' is important to us.

E) We both love the outdoors and the countryside. We both love outdoor sports such as mountain biking and treking during the summer. Whilst during the winter we can currently only dream of popping over to the mountain range for a weekend of skiing/snowboarding.

F) Culture, culture, and culture! We enjoy shopping in a big city (i.e. London), eating in family owned (i.e. non-commercialised) restaurants, going to the theatre and/or watching a concert, and taking in the atmosphere of random events close to the heart of the community we are in at the time.

G) Admittedly we are both very materialistic. I my audio & video equipment (Plasma TV's, AV soundsystems, etc), and we both like to wear designer clothes.

H) In the distant future we would like a fair amount of land to live on. Well, an acre or two of land for a large family home with a large garden/land surrounding it would be ideal. Obviously due to my interest in construction, I would want to design and build my own home. Although for the first couple of years (pre-family time) a nice apartment in the centre of a city (i.e. Melbourne) is ideal. We're extremely lucky and fortunate enough to have some good financial backing for this to take place.

I) Good schools and education for our future kids. I know I know we're still young and maybe thinking too far ahead... But this is important for us to take it account. I've put it at the bottom of the list for now though...

Question:

Is Australia likely to meet our above 'wants'? If in your opinion this would be so, could you suggest some areas of Australia for us to further research into? Due to me not being too fond of excessive heat, I feel those parts of North Australia are out and in regards to snow during the winter... Do you get any that's worth mentioning?

Although any other opinions or comments are very welcome. Even ideas regarding other countries to look at if Australia doesn't sound (in your opinion) right for us...

Yep. Without a doubt, Melbourne's for you.

You'd get everything on your list. Snow's not exactly the Swiss Alps but there are 3-4 reasonably-sized ski resorts within 3-4 hours drive of Melbourne. It has a population of over 3m so has as much culture, restaurants, designer clothes and plasmas anyone could need.

Wow, I'd have to recommend where WE live right now....MADISON, Wisconsin, USA. The public schools are great! There's plenty of land for small (and large farming opportunities). There are multiple active Farmer's Markets. Real Seasons! Very SAFE. A brand New State of the Art Overture Centre was given to our city about 5 tears ago...plus Chicago is only 3 hours away. Plenty of opportunity to buy the latest technical stuff. Plus Madison was rated one of the best Places to Live in recent years. http://www.visitmadison.com/resource...category_id=35

Give me one solid example of where the 'uncontrolled immigration' policy of the UK has affected your life adversly.

Since it is your primary reason for leaving I would like to hear more before offering my suggestions.

The average edition of the Daily Mail is now 450 pages. I am sure there are many poor paper boys out there with serious RSIs.

A lot of what you want is in melbourne, but a few things stand out as well slightly off base.

Melboure is about as multicultural as you can get, IMO thats a big , I'd say about as multicultural as any UK/USA/CDN city many are refugees/struggling/long established ethnic communities, as well as the select educated type, it seems a strange choice for someone wanting to escape immigrants

Rising housing prices, melbs got super expensive in last 18 months, cost of living high anywhere in OZ now, but melb property is pretty crazy priced.

Melb is pretty rainy in winter, and pretty darn hot often in summer.

Melbs probably the better dressed choice for oz ( city centre not burbs) but nowhere in OZ is really into designer gear, quite the opposite, daggy

What do you mean Sir!?-we have Prada here in Melly!

Nowhere can really beat London for shopping if that's what you're used to (as I was!) but there are some funky shops here. Still, evis and his partner are in their early twenties & I am in my mid-thirties with designer clothes being lower on my list of priorities than they were 10 years ago.

Seriously, as you say Melbourne is a very ethnically diverse place with loads of immigrants which is part of it's charm. But if that's what you're trying to escape from then probably not for you...

And a lot of readers ... wrist RSI when they post a picture of Thatcher and facial RSI caused by all that nervous twitching and anticipating the country going to the dogs.

Actually 'going to the dogs' ... why dogs?

It's true; they're even running an afternoon edition concurrently to ensure that they don't miss all the bad news. (There's just so much of it these days, you know!)

Letters from "Disgusted, of Tunbridge Wells" have reached epic proportions, and can now be found in their own 16-page liftout.

you seem to be in a very comparable situation to me and my girlfriend

we too are both students in a fashion

im about to return to uni to do a PGCE in biology teaching and my girlfriends doing an MA in forensic pychology.

were both planning on leaving the country for similar reasons although not for the problems with immigrants because in the next few years there all going to be heading home since the minimum wage has gone up so much in countries that have recently joined the EU.

We have our sights set on melbourne or around there generally because mmy girlfriend already has family there and niether of us could deal with it being hot all year round.

Thank you for the replies so far. Just to make myself clear, I am NOT trying to get away from immigrants. I'll be one myself afterall! I'm trying to get away from an uncontrollable stream of immigration. Such as in the UK where pretty much ANYONE can become a citizen without much of a problem... Aus & Canada, among others controls this procedure with their points systems, visas, weighing up the pros & cons of each person they allow through their borders...
