Thanks for the lecture Vash. I know the postie has to deliver it if its addressed, I've worked for Aus Post too, and what I saw of some working practices was a real eye opener.
BTW this junk mail isn't addressed to anyone, its just piles of glossy dead trees.

Junk mail in my experience does not go anywhere near the letter box, its usually delivered by someone with a mullet hairdo driving an old falcon or holden with fellow mullet in the passenger seat who hurls it out the window while mullet 1 keeps driving. No junk signs would need to be rather larger than a letter box sticker, more like a road sign

Unless you catch him in the act, you shouldn't blame your postie. The vast majority of junk mail is not actually dropped off by the postie, but hand-delivered by local distributors who are contracted for the purpose. You will usually find it folded inside the community newspaper, but it often arrives in loose-leaf form.

(b) Lodge a complaint.
If you have a "No Junk Mail" sticker and it's not helping, you should contact the Distribution Standards Board. Their Code of Practice prohibits companies and distributors from delivering junk mail to houses with "No Junk Mail" stickers on their letterbox. Distributors who ignore this sticker will be disciplined and/or dismissed.

(c) Step up the defence.
Scrap your old sticker and get one which says "Australia Post Articles Only." Once this on your letterbox, it is illegal for anyone to deliver mail to you which has not passed through Aussie Post.

Generally speaking, mail which is addressed to a member of the household and for which postage has been paid by the sender, must be delivered. The postie is obliged to drop it in your letterbox even if he suspects that it's junk mail of some description.

Remember also that one man's "junk mail" is another man's "special offer" or "privileged customer" offer. A postie can't refuse to deliver your Laura Ashley catalogue just because he's decided that it's "junk mail."

However, if an item looks like an illegal scam letter, he is authorised to withhold it and report it to his supervisor.

We used to do this at the Perth Mail Centre, where we kept several large crates for the storage of dodgy scam letters.

Once these were full, we shipped them back to the company which had sent them...
