Agreed, but I think 'we're doing it for the adventure' sounds better than 'we're bored and my mother-in-law is driving me mad'. (In my case, it was a case of 'I've already had the adventure, now I'm looking for a bit more, but ease up'!)

Both sound better than 'the Uk is going to the dogs', which I've often said is an attempt to politicise their decision when really it might be based on far less important things. That accusation invariably falls flat though when people post on BE...

Yes the "the UK is going to the dogs" reason is often a cover up. Simple point of fact is that it isn't going to the dogs for everyone (both Brits and the hoards of newcomers every year).

I think this also gets at what Oink was saying about "success"...that there are plenty of successful people in the UK that wouldn't think about emigrating, and indeed the more "successful" one is in the UK, the less likely one is to leave. It's a pretty good island, after all.

Evidently you haven't quite mastered the upbeat and laid back attitude of the Aussies yet.

Saying that people only emigrate because they're 'failing' in some way is as stupid as saying people who don't emigrate lack confidence and motivation.

People emigrate for countless reasons. End of.

That's not the right way of framing it. Sometimes are people are successful and want more success. They have a good career, for example, a happy home, but they see that they can get even more of the good life if they emigrate.

As you say people emigrate for countless reasons. But by in large, if it's not purely for family, then there is some element of a better life in the equation. Could be weather, could home, could be career, schooling, many things.

No. THIS is not the right way of framing it!! This well researched and evidenced piece of - um - writing, that led to this discussion and which dismisses every UK emigrant as an inadequate failure.

It's really only people who can't make it in the UK and think a geographical fix to their personal inadequacies want to move. You know "its an adventure" right?

I wonder if Oink got a government grant for this study? I'd like to see the thesis. Scratch that, I wouldn't

It is patent nonsense to give one reason (eg failures) as to why people emigrate. A moment's thought and a quick Google search will throw up a multitude of reasons which don't apply equally to all. e.g.

Financially Secured Future:
High Standard of Living:
Education:
Start of a Series:
Political Reasons:
Needs of Different Personalities:
Soul Mate:

Why do people migrate?

People migrate for many different reasons. These reasons can be classified as economic, social, political or environmental:

economic migration - moving to find work or follow a particular career path
social migration - moving somewhere for a better quality of life or to be closer to family or friends
political migration - moving to escape political persecution or war
environmental causes of migration include natural disasters such as flooding

Some people choose to migrate, eg someone who moves to another country to enhance their career opportunities. Some people are forced to migrate, eg someone who moves due to war or famine.

A refugee is someone who has left their home and does not have a new home to go to. Often refugees do not carry many possessions with them and do not have a clear idea of where they may finally settle.
Push and pull factors

Push factors are the reasons why people leave an area. They include:

lack of services
lack of safety
high crime
crop failure
drought
flooding
poverty
war

Pull factors are the reasons why people move to a particular area. They include:

higher employment
more wealth
better services
good climate
safer, less crime
political stability
more fertile land
lower risk from natural hazards

Migration usually happens as a result of a combination of these push and pull factors.

Migration push and pull factors

It is suggested the 10 Major Reasons Why People Emigrate to Canada are:

1. Canada has a strong migration history which can be seen today as much as ever before. Increased migration accounted for 1.2 million of the 1.6 million increase in Canada’s population between 2001 and 2006. On average, 200,000 people migrate to Canada every year.
2. Immigration has been a key factor in the growth of Canada’s economy over the last decade.
3. Anyone who enjoys the wide open spaces will love Canada, with its population density of 3.5 people per square kilometre – the lowest in the world.
4. Canada is one of the world’s richest nations, boasting an impressively high income per capita of US$35,500. It is also a member of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and Group of Eight (G8).
5. The quality of life In Canada is absolutely first-rate, and Canada is constantly receiving awards and accolades to affirm this. In 2005, Vancouver won the global award for overall quality of life, with Canada as a whole being ranked 11th out of 114, and Calgary was awarded world’s most environmentally friendly and cleanest city. More recently, the Heritage Foundation in conjunction with the Wall Street Journal ranked Canada 10th out of 161 in the 2007 Index of Economic Freedom, and the Economist named Canada as the world’s 8th most peaceful country in 2007.
6. The opportunities for employment in Canada are plentiful, and potential migrants with a skilled trade behind them will find that their chances of successfully applying for migration to Canada are significantly increased. Opportunities are also rife for businessmen and investors whose work will help to increase Canada’s already flourishing economy.
7. The price of housing in Canada is significantly cheaper than other western countries such as the UK, and migrants are always pleasantly surprised to discover that for a fraction of the price they sold their house for in the UK, they were able to buy the house of their dreams.
8. Migration has been a key factor in the evolution of Canada’s culture, and as a result, multiculturalism is embraced throughout the country. People from various countries throughout the world are therefore welcome in Canada, and migrants can be sure that they will feel accepted whatever part of the country they chose to settle in.
9. Sports and outdoor life are very popular in Canada. The national winter sport of ice hockey is a national pastime and by far the country’s most popular spectator sport. Lacrosse, curling, Canadian football, golf, baseball, skiing, snowboarding, soccer, basketball and volleyball are also widely played and supported.
10. As a Country that boasts breathtaking scenery as well as first-rate urban life, Canada is one of the world’s most visited tourist destinations. Owing to its size, many Canadians choose to holiday within the country, and with eye-opening cities such as Ottawa, Toronto and Montreal, as well as the stunning scenery of Niagara falls and Gatineau National Park, this is hardly surprising.
