From July next year Rudd and his cronies want to introduce mandatory ISP filters that will filter out "inappropriate" content (with the government of course deciding what is inappropriate) in what is essentially the same thing as the Great Firewall of China. Porn is the obvious example, but it will include anything the government deems inappropriate. Euthanasia, for example.

Not only is this a massive infringement on our Universal Human Rights as dictated by the UNHDR which we are signatory to (and which the government seems to obey when it wants and disregard when it wants) it will also slow down our already slow by global standards internet to new lows. It could potentially cripple our internet.

So slower internet and being told what I can and cannot look at? Thank god i’m leaving in July.

Thats fair enough, but exactly how far should they be able to censor the net?

Yea, but you like many will just see it as that and bend over for the government.

It's more than that, it will block sites that the government doesn’t agree with and will also slow down the net here, which is already terribly slow.

It’s already illegal to look at child porn and people already get done for it. Why should the rest of us who don’t look at porn have to have our sites chosen for us and our internet slowed?

They also claim it’s to make the net safer for kid’s, but I’m sorry you shouldn’t have your kids on the net unsupervised in the first place.

You give them this controll, what will you give them next? Let them tell you what you can and can't buy? or Where you can and cant go? where will it stop?

i dont have an answer to that - there are sites where you can see aborted babies which is horrible - should they be shown???? personally i think they should but i know that there is many people who would disagree with it

personally i think that a ban is inpractical and unworkable , we all know that we can change ip? ( is that the right term) adresses

But personally I find religion offensive, should that mean any religious sites should banned? No.

Who are the government to dictate to people what they will and won’t find offensive, what they can and cannot view? What about freedom of choice?

We've been discussing it at work.

Anyone will be able to see these so called "dodgy" sites that the government is going to blacklist by clicking the Google cache link, so unless they are going to block Google then it can't work.

Arseholes, they should have given the money to me, what a waste.

You see I was already leaving, now I’m even more happy that I am. Leaving just because of this? Don’t be stupid, there are plenty of other reasons. I don’t hate Australia, I just prefer Europe.

Mikey, I hope you're not going to CCTV central aka the UK whose "subjects" are the most spied on anywhere in the world? Have you not heard they are going to monitor everyone's emails and make you carry ID cards?

Haha, heard that, but nah I ain't going to the UK - did'nt they say that every person is captured on over 300 cameras in one day, just from going to work and back.

Not a fan of enforced censorship myself, although having lived in Singapore I had to put up with some and also assumed absolutely nothing was private.
