Anyone have any thoughts on IT in Aus. We are looking to move to Perth for various reasons (weather mainly) but all the IT jobs seem to be in Melbourne or Sydney. I work in networking/security and it seems strange that there are very few IT jobs in WA. Am I missing something ? Don't they use computers in WA
Any thoughts on IT in general as there seems to be quite a few IT people out there ?

I'm not an IT person, but from what others have said and jobs availability, it seems the IT bubble has burst,

Don't think the IT bubble ever got going in Australia, I went three years ago and then they had "an IT shortage" jobs were scarce and those being offered paid peanuts, mainly because loads of peeps looking for few jobs.
The problem with Perth is its always going to be a "branch office", companys operate in Sydney, Melbourne etc. and the branch office is in Perth.
It appears to me that IT in Perth is very much who you know rather than what you know.
Much depends on your skill level, plus Australia is more geared to jack of all trades. So if you are a specialist its harder to get work.
My speciality was NetWare great for year 2000, not worth the paper its written on now. But I am also a realist, at 39 I am too old for the IT game, (Its called over qualified in polite circles).
UK is paying £25 - 30k for good IT people, networking, servers, etc. on permie basis. So realistically you would need to earn about £22k in Oz to maintain same lifestyle (there is a calculator thingy on a site but cant remember where) so you need to earn $55000, take a look on job boards, you will be lucky to earn $30000.

From my own (some-what limited) experience of IT jobs and Perth, I would say that this is a pretty decent summing up of the situation.
