Aussies are fatter than Americans

THE average Australian woman is a size 16 and weighs 8kg heavier than her American counterpart, according to authoritive new international research.

Australian men are also 3kg heavier than American males, the joint study by the University of Adelaide and US researchers shows.

Must be the lifestyle. Very worrying implications for health resources and the health of the nation. Not sure where other nations fit in as the British are mushrooming as well.

Bondipom have to agree. Its the first that I remember on arrival was that so many people were overweight. This countries like a walking health time bomb! Fit, tanned lads and lasses playing beach volleyball????????? Ummmmmm at the olympics maybe, but certainly not in SE Qld!

Its sad people are permanatley in cars, junk food is on every corner, malls have entire levels dedicated to fatty crap for sale, the sport lovers usually expend all energy with one thumb and the remote control. The nation needs a big fat kick up the arse no other way of putting it, fat lazy and costing the health system a fortune.

Bondi has its share of the 'beautiful people' however it seems the further one gets from the Ocean out to suburbia the larger people get. Only my own anecdotal evidence.

Red Rooster is a takeaway place, specialises in chicken.
Have to say that I am not the slim sylphlike type, and in the UK there was far less choice of clothes - I'm a size 16 (UK) and over here there are far more shops that have stuff in my size, which tends to indicate that overall people need larger sizes more.

Polly - would love some shopping hints for the 'larger woman' - esp for lingerie (PM me if you don't want to risk invoking the forum perverts ). Am also finding it very hard to get 'smart' jackets & trousers in sizes 14/16.

There's a shop here called My Size which has some stylish things, but their sizes 14/16 are HUGE and designed for tall women, too, I think.

l think the article is wrong, if you travel to both the USA and OZ you will notice a hell of alot more fat people in America then you will in OZ.

The article does point out that the difference between USA & Oz is pretty small - 8 Kg springs to mind.

Someone in the article reckons that the slight increase in size is because Ozzies are generally more prosperous. That seems a bit of an odd argument to me. Poorer people tend to be fatter in my experience; the more wealthy can afford to eat better, exercise more, etc.

I contradict my own general rule, being middle class, educated and fat. Natch, if I move to Oz (down the road from you) I will be a transformed character and do lots of swimming once I have my own pool.

Yes, having just got back from Florida we agree - there are many more grossly obese Americans than Osssies from our perspective, we have visited Oz 4 times in last 3 years and USA 3 times in last 4 years.

So many of them seem to be classified as handicapped simply because of obesity and they do not seem to be able to make the connection between obesity and lack of exercise,

I love my sport and exercise, my normal week goes like this;
Monday - Body Combat
Tuesday - gym & run
Weds - Touch Footy
Thurs - step & swim
Fri - gym (whenever I can make it!)
Sat - Step & swim (when I can make it!)
Sunday - Run/Step

My problem is, as mentioned above, so much greasy food everywhere... now, without trying to spark a UK/OZ debate, I did find that in the UK while there was just as much crap about there was a lot more healthy choice. To try and find a jacket potato here which doesnt come with a topping of cheese and sour cream as standard (yes, I know you can ask for it without, but that often leaves you with no filling at all) or a pasta dish which isn't loaded with fat is very rare The MYO shops are quite good, otherwise its often hard to even get a sandwich without mayo/butter on! Homemade salads for me most lunches!!
