Aussie voltage
Strange question but what voltage do Australian homes run at?
We've got a lot of electrical equipment that, when we move to Australia, we don't really want to have to sell for little only to buy new of when we get there.
I heard that its the same in Australia as it is in Blighty but we'd have to change the plugs.

Re: Aussie voltage
Anyone know if a Nintendo Wii will work?
Its UK version so will only play UK games. But hoping that will only need adaptor to play. Will it work on Oz tv?
As it was a pain in the butt to get for Christmas (not many available at launch)
So dont want to get rid of it.

Re: Aussie voltage
For 243 time this year... Oz uses a different variation of Pal, where the sound in vhf. Some european tvs can switch as some countries use the same standard

Re: Aussie voltage
But it does say!
" Australia (uses PAL-B (UHF band), but Zweiton for stereo) (NOTE: Australia is currently in the process of upgrading analogue PAL broadcasts to DVB-T digital broadcasts. A complete phase out of analogue is planed to take place between 2010 and 2012."
"United Kingdom (UHF only), converting to DVB-T on UHF. PAL-I transmissions due to cease by 2012."
Doesn't this mean that if your TV is digital then it will be able to pick up digital signals in OZ?
According to Wiki OZ and UK are UHF! So I am more confused!

More and more tvs are now global and can switch between the standards as they are pretty close. i.e. germany uses PAL-B too, so if you're tv can switch to germany then you should be ok.
I think digital ( ie freeview in the UK) has very little rollout in Aus.

Re: Aussie voltage
Aussie runs at 240Volt/50hertz - why not take a load of plug packs with u , then you only need to change the one plug on the end of the plug pack.... you wont find things like adapters down there, they were made illegal sometime back due to overloading appliances the increase of electrical fires in homes.
for example where the transformer is moulded into the plug
why ?
two reasons
one -- the vast majority of adaptors dont have an earth pin, so in the presence of a fault, it aint earthed
two -- the electrical connection via an adaptor is flimsy at best
use one of these on something that takes a decent load ie kettle and you`ll end up with a lovely burnt adaptor and i dont need to tell you the possible consiquences of that
pop down to bunnings and at $3 a piece buy some aussie plug tops
its dead easy and means that your appliance gets a proper connection

Re: Aussie voltage
For the sparkies...
Australia is 240V. In the UK nominal voltage has been officially changed to 230 V however 240 V is within tolerances and commonly found.
