Aussie Flag: What's it's pet name?
Like Union Jack (UK), Tricolour(Ireland), Stars and Stripes(US) etc.
Or are these countries unusual in having pet names for their flags?
Anyone know??

Not many countries have special names for their flags that are recongnisable internationally.

Many countries have tricolour flags (France is another one) and the term "Union Jack" is technically incorrect unless the flag is flying at the stern of a ship.

I thought it was known as the Southern Cross... as I believe that's what the stars represent.

Sorry, I get like this when I read too much non-fiction.
But that is interesting about the Union Jack being a sea-going term.
Thanks for all the responses.

It's the Eureka Flag.
"The Eureka Flag is thought to have been designed by a Canadian gold miner by the name of "Lieutenant" Ross during the Eureka Stockade uprising in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1854.
... Today, the Eureka flag is often used as a symbol of rebellion against authority by people at the extreme left and the extreme right of the political spectrum in Australia. It has been used in marches by neo-Nazis on the one hand and draped over the coffins of deceased Communists on the other."

Born, bred and raised Aussie...never, ever heard the Aussie flag referred to as the Southern Cross. The position of the stars on the flag represents the Southern Cross.
