Aus mobile in UK
Left aus in one massive frenzy, loads of last minute stuff came up.
Now in Uk. Problem - I have a pre paid optus mobile with me. Usually leave it in OZ.
Turned it on today in UK to find a heap of messages and voice mail and had to answer one call.
Do they charge you global roaming for messages as well as calls.
Phone has been switched off most of time but messages banking up.
If I dont answer/read the messages till I get back to OZ can they still bloody charge me the crazy global roaming fees?
Seems if on prepaid global roaming is the default setting, had no idea, and now cant turn it off!!

You don't pay to receive SMS...you will pay to retrieve voicemail.
But if you're on prepaid you can't rack up a huge bill...you can only do that on postpaid.

Well thats how I read it, but my trust in optus is well...... low
The phone has about $15 of credit and about $400 of optus money ( free credit) so I assume then it will just cut out soon...
Tried eveyrthing to disable global roaming but it is preset on prepaid and looks like you can only disable it from oz.
Only been away 3 days, already disaster with rental tenants, bank has disabled an account with a large investment in it that needs transfer, one of the teens left behind has gone on a bender/broken romance.
Ahhh holidays so relaxing OMG I cant escape OZ even when 10,000 miles away.

Well thats good to hear after BC's nice calming advice.
Have been reading total horror stories while googling how to turn off.
I mean really who would think a pre paid optus card is a free ticket for them to hit you with global roaming charges Didnt even know it was preset/default, thats just wrong!
I hope BC is right not you .

Apart from having to contend with Optus I hope you are having a great holiday!
I would have thought that once your prepaid credit has been used up then you have a brick (or a doorstop, whichever takes your fancy!) Unfortunately you probably cant even chuck a UK sim in it and use it because chances are it is locked to Optus (there is usually a little man in the market who will be able to unlock it for you for a nominal fee though)

Re: Aus mobile in UK
Holiday is going well. Apart from my bright idea you can take a 9 week holiday in 3 countries, and just work on the computer as you go, funny how lots of little things you need to be in the country for come up as soon as you leave - typical. Hence me being up middle of night.
The OZ mobile should never have been in the bag, we have US UK phone thing sorted, the OZ one just got left in there, and as soon as I started googlin, Aussies global roaming stories of $6500 optus bills kept coming up. Hence my questions.
First impressions of UK, shock! I thought I was in Vermont in fall In Virginia Water Surrey, not exactly a 'hood, 4million pound homes are anything to go by. But the colours, I was expecting mid november - grey. Autumn used to be earliler I am sure, this is autumn in full glory, amazing when you were expecting something more grey - Sunday in particular was spectacular - fall leaves with a light dusting of frost. Very beautiful.
Had to put it all in perspective ( for the BE picker and trudge up on the train to stomp around souff london, rough as guts, but I love it. The good old London accents are rare now more east european, but you still get the odd "luv" accent, "
Had to battle the new primark oxford street, the qantas flight attendant was raving about it. I was so overwhelmed I bought nothing teens wanted jeans, OK then of the 400 pairs and styles which do you want ? 6 quid or 10? Simple pyjamas, 200 styles and colours, all around a fiver and were out of there for a M&S sandwhich, I have to have one, its my only M&S thing
Not much doom and gloom on the telly, just one BBC/Sex scandal/debacle after another, bit sick of it, so I watched corrie, really weird, usually nobody I recognise in it, but a load of old faces seem to be back.
Speaking of qantas, flight over was awful. Family with norovirus symptoms on plane and only one loo working!!!!!!! in premium economy full cabin all the way from sydney to london. Watched Kath and Kynderalla to add to the experience, some funny bits, passed an hour or so.
