ATO query....
Going to find an expert but thought I'd see if anyone knows on here first. Didn't complete a tax return this year because I didn't pay any tax 2012/13. However, prior to 30th June 13 I inherited 30% of the mother's estate in the UK. Now, as yet, although probate has been granted, none of the liquid assets are in a bank account in my name. We do still have the house though. Does anyone know for definite if I need to complete a tax return here.

I did that and unless I've been a total moron, I still shouldn't do a return. Not convinced though. (Of having to do the return, not whether I'm a moron or not).

Re: ATO query....
When my father's estate was settled by my brother as executor, all the necessary taxes (death duty, etc) were paid to the Inland Revenue - what was left over was split 50:50 between us and my share was not liable for any Australian tax when I received it over here. As long as you have the necessary documentation to show that all UK taxes have been paid on the money you don't need to declare it here as income.
