Talking Arrrgghh .... advice on renting before we leave

He, he, he ... we've both just quit, our house is on the market and we're just finalising packing everything up into little boxes!

We're off travelling to Vietnam and China for a couple of months before we more out (legals etc being finalised whilst we are away) but before we go we need to set up some temp' accom for when we arrive in Melbourne (mid September)

Our plan is to rent a furnished unit for a month (arranged from the UK) and then hunt for a decent rental place before buying 6mths later.
Does this sound reasonable and what is this about 'applications' before you rent a place.

Laura and I have been rather lucky in that a soon as we left uni we were able to buy our own place and didn't need to rent - - so we won't be able to get any references!

We also have two cats which we're bringing out ... is it more difficult to rent a place if we disclose that they will be living with us? :scared:

Many thanks

Nick and Laura

You may struggle with the cats in the short term accomodation as most of them are apartments! However, once you get to the long term, you shouldn't have too many probs. We have a cat and a dog and this place was advertised as no pets but a nice letter to the landlord was all that was needed to change that, we didn't even have to pay a huge deposit as security which was nice

Do you have a mortgage? You could get a reference off the mortgage company to say that you hve always paid on time etc.

As far as renting once you get there, take a look on http://yellabrickroad.com/tempaccom.html as there are a couple of short term lets specific to Melbourne there and an awful lot more companies that are Australia wide. Also look at the Renting a property section as that tells you all about the process including application etc.

I am so envious of your trip to Vietnam and China! Hope you have a fantastic time!

I'll be interested to hear how you get on. We're in pretty much the same boat. Arriving in Melb January with two cats not far behind us. Can you keep us updated - have you any ideas who to use for cat shipping and unit rental?
Because we're a few months off yet , we haven't started to go down that road just yet...
