On arrival: Top ten recommendations for what to do first.
 

Hi again guys.

We arrive in Perth in just under three weeks for good. :D :D We already have a house sorted and we dont need to find jobs as we work in IT from home, so will be continuing our business, only sat at a sunnier desk. We already have a bank account, and we have an eighteen month old daughter, so nurseries will come into the equation, although not straight away, and then only part time perhaps two mornings a week.

What are everyones recommendations of the things we need to get sorted first. Do we get a tax number first, employ an accountant. Get medical insurance sorted etc. etc.

Any advice greatly appreciated, what did you all do, and what should you have got done, that you didnt know about.

I would advise having a weeks break at first to refresh you for the task in hand. I guess you will need to set up a business and get an ABN (Australian business NO) as well a TFN. ABC Diamond can advise you on the process and the need for an accountant.

The FIRST thing you MUST do is NOT put your child in a nursery !!

Here in OZ they sell plants in nurseries !!!

Use child care :) It's much better :D :D

next : get a small fridge so that the chocolate cadbury fingers don't melt :D (sorry couldn't resist !! :) )

We will be having a good looooooong months break, before doing any form of work at all, just wanted to get the ball rolling with the tax people etc. Might as well spend a day doing all that stuff then relax for a month..........any more 'sensible' ;) advice.

Have a look at that ATO web page for Tax info, and then fire away with any other questions.

Deifinitely one of the first 10 things to do on arrival is to decide whether you are going to support the Eagles or the Dockers or even more sensible, a Melbourne team. :D

Good luck with the move. Usual first things to do as suggested are TFN, ABN, plus Bank Account, Medicare, Accountant (?), Complying Superannuation Fund etc, etc.

Then after 15 seconds when you realise that Aussie Rules is a load of shite, go and get FoxTel installed so you can watch proper "footie"....:D

I know it sounds minor, but one of the best things we did in the first few days was to buy a detailed street map, that way you can know where you've been when you get lost!

More seriously, you need to get yourself 'into the system' sort out something (anything) that gives you formal proof of your new address in Australia - even if its only a temp address to start with (e.g. car registration, utility bill, bank statement). You'll find that everything you susequently sign up for (schools, medicare, telstra, credit cards/credit, mobile phone, TFN, etc) ask for that proof - and the easier it all becomes.

You can also deal directly with the ATO online now and file all your BAS online; you can even view your account with them and see how much you owe them!

Guess you'll be wanting an ADSL connection? Checkout www.swiftdsl.com.au they are pretty good and reasonably priced. This is of course if you need ADSL and your house is in an area that can get it. Not all places in Perth can receive ADSL yet.

Also find the nearest Dr to you that bulk bills, its much easier that way.

Don’t know what the childcare is like in Perth, but if it is anything like NSW, it could take you some time to visit all the centres. Get your names down on the waiting list as soon as possible.
