I am so glad that other people share my feelings about this. My terror of spiders has been the hardest thing to try and get to grips with .We are awaiting our visa, due any time now,and seriously,I sometimes think " well,if it all goes pete tong, and we dont get it,at least Ill never have to share my bedroom/living room/ bathroom with one of those monstrosities
Honestly ,saw one of those no going back, down under programmes a while back. Wife had gone to plant nursery, bought a baby tree,as she was getting it out of the boot,a spider ran out and disappeared into her car. She wouldnt go in it again, hubby had to sell it. My oh said he would never do that.( sell a car due to awol spider) Maybe not, but I for one would Never Ever go in it again. NASTY BAS*ARDS. Spiders not men!

Yes,good idea, Lets pretend there arent any spiders in sydney. actually,at my daughters pre school, one of the mums is from Sydney, she said there arent as many spiders as you think there will be. She said be carefull in the garden, near drains or outside taps, cos the funnelwebs like damp. Thats me out of gardening duty then

It now appears to be dead behind the bathroom door. I'm taking no chances it can stay until hubby gets back from business.

We have also had a mighty big huntsman and a whitetail. Oh and the other night a house spider (sounds harmless, but no not in Aus) decided it wanted to kip in bed with us. luckily the cat found it. arghhhh.

I'm becoming obsessed.
Is the cat ok?
I am worried about cockroaches? are they everywhere, we had them here in our last rented house and they were everywhere and I got slightly paranoid about them to the point they were making me have panic attacks I was thinking at night they would all come out and crawl all over me...
I really am ok with spiders poisonous or non poisonous but the roaches...thats another story....
Please tell me they arent everywhere?

They're everywhere. Big ones, little ones. There's lots of stuff on the market to kill them off, but unfortunately you'll probably still see them when you step outside your house. But I've never had one crawl over me, and they move pretty quickly - and the roach spray is very effective in killing them.

Huntsman spiders - they're the good guys, and will eat nasty things for you. We had one called Harry living with us for a while, he died though which was very sad

I do get a bit nervous about funnel webs and red backs though...

Hi The cat was fine, she didnt get hold of it, hubby removed it. I'm sorry to say that the cockies are everywhere, you cant escape em. Luckily we dont get loads of them little ones, we just get the odd big one. the cats take most of them out luckily. Huntsmen dont bother me too much, hubby takes them outside so that cats dont kill them. I dont like the spiders in the house but I couldnt kill one, thats mean. KILL ALL COCKROACHES THOUGH YUKKKKK

Make sure the cockies don't take up residence in the door of the dishwasher. Colleague at work wondered why dishwasher wouldn't work properly. Called the man out and when he removed the door they all fell out. Nice and warm and damp for them.

My wife (aussie) tells me of the day they had a funnel-web spider in the house. The cat and it were in a sort of mexican stand-off; the spider up on it's haunches, not really bothered by the cat.

What you have to remember with the Sydney Funnel Web Spider, it is NOT scared of you. If you corner it, it will attack.

Demands a grudging kinda respect doesn't it ?

A quick note for cat owners too, a customer of mine, when I was a gardener here in Queensland, told me that her cat had *brought into the house* (though the cat flap) a very alive red-bellied black snake.

Far from ideal, that.

Hi

I have never seen any cockroaches down in Bunbury (although I may have just been lucky). Yes there are redbacks (have seen some) and I believe there are whitetails (not seen them). I have seen huntsmen and some other strange looking things that I don't know what they are. We don't get funnelwebs over here (as far as I know).

Must say that when I was over here on holiday last year that we did see some cockroaches in Perth and also nar walpole (I think that is how it is spelt).

I have a phobia about spiders and every time I go out at night I am like a nervous wreck but it is not half as bad as I thought it would be.
