Default Applying for a tax number prior

Hi all
Just wondered how we go about applying for a tax number while say living in holiday accomadation, can't well give there address? can one apply online prior to arriving in Australia?
Anyone who has any help please let us know.

Cheers
Mark

You can't apply until you get there.

When you book your rental just ask if you can use that address.

You can do it all online at www.ato.gov.au and it takes about a week to get the tax file number sent to you by post.

Check out the application requirements there.

you do do it all online but you need to be in Australia first and have an australian address. We actually went into the offices to apply for a number and they just directed us to some computers and said do it over there!

You can do it online but as soon as you input your passport number the system knows whether or not you've arrived in Oz! (very clever!! ). Do it as soon as you arrive and it only takes a few days to come through.

We applied online a few days after we arrived in Oz - You need to be in the Country. We phoned up the tax office as we were in holiday accommodation (BIG4 holiday park). The tax office advised us to use the holiday park address. We checked with reception and they were ok for us to do this. It can take up to 28 days to arrive but if you do it as soon as you arrive you should be fine. The holiday park have been very good at forwarding post to our rental address.

Did ours during a week's validation trip; gave a son's address, and did it all online at the library.

The ATO don't seem in the slightest bit interested in your address - we have changed places several times and tried to tell them but they look at us as if we're mad. I don't think they are too used to people offering to pay tax.

You could open a PO Box in Oz from the UK ready for when you arrive in Oz. You can use the PO box address for you tax file number and collect any post they store for you - they will be happy to forward your post from the UK to temp addresses for 12 months.

Yes but you still can't apply for the tax file number unless you're in Australia!
