Applying for Tax File Number

Can you apply from the UK or do you have to be in Aus to apply.

I have looked at this:

https://iar.ato.gov.au/iarweb/defaul...id=1&outcome=1

But not carried out the process. If you apply online do you have to provide any additional info.

I envisage ID being a problem as we will only have passport and no Aus ID. Initially we will be in short term rental property ie weeks not months.

In a nutshell how does it all work.

hi abertawe (what part of swansea are you from). i was born and brought up in swansea and am due there on saturday for 3 weeks.

with regards to tax file number i am sure you have to give an address here in australia. we got our tax file number during our first week here when we were staying in a holiday let for a month there were no problems, also no problems using that address for centrelink just got a letter from the manager of holiday let saying that we were staying there.

hope that helps a little bit.

Don't worry, it's all very easy and no problem :).

Yes, you have to be in Australia to apply. You apply over the internet. ID isn't a problem. Once you're in the country "the authorities" know you're there because your passport gets scanned when you enter the country. The only "detail" you need to prove your ID is your passport number.

We landed at Perth at 3.25pm and registered online for our TFN at our hotel at around 8.30pm. Easy peasy.

The link in your post is the correct one for the online application. You simply click "next" at the bottom of that page and carry on from there.

When it asks for your address you put in your rental address even if it's only a short term one. You can then easily arrange a 1 month (or three months) mail-forwarding at the post office if your TFN hasn't arrived by the time you move out of your short term rental.

Once you've received your TFN, you phone up the bank and tell them what it is. Tell your employer as well.

All very easy and nothing to worry about.
