application denied?Any ideas
My wife is applying as a skilled migrant and does well on the points score. She was however convicted of handling stolen goods 19 years ago for which she got a £500 fine. Her police checks no longer show these convictions but we intend to declare them anyway. The NZIS operations manual states that convictions relating to dishonesty may result in the application being denied or deferred. Seems abit harsh for something done at age 18, nearly 20 years ago. Any advice, ideas? Should we spend the money on our application?

Don't be a donut - if her records clear (pc), and she's been a good girl since, then you've 'nothing to declare, pass go and collect your visa'

She is still extremely likely to pass the character requirements, which in my opinion are pretty generous - look it up on the DIMIA site.
If they find out you have lied in the application, that's it - rejected, thanks for playing.

I think you'll be OK. In your position, I would include a signed statement explaining that it was all that time ago, that you sincerely regret it, that you have got a perfect honest track record since, that you would be very happy to discuss it with your case officer at interview if it will help.
NZIS are fairly OK about things like this if they like and believe you are sincere.

If the form says you must declare all convictions, even spent ones, then you must declare it.

Cautionary advice for NOT DECLARING !!!!
When we filed our mains, debs told me of a likkle conviction she had when she was 17 for slapping a girl in the face in a pub. A quite inoquious event.
The girl pressed charges against debs and she was fined £25.00 quid YEP £25.00
I said NAH dont tellem for gods sake it was 21 years ago, Debs said , STeve it says YOU MUST DECLARE all spent convictions !!
So i said upto you.. She declared this minor "slapping" incident .
This morning her police checks came back, and low and behold, itemised is her conviction for ABH listing crime ref number, officer, fine outcome etc dated some 21 years ago !!
The truth has a nasty way of biting you on the ARSE when you aint lookin.
Be honest , cheats dont prosper !!

good advice timber, i had to declare a couple of convictions and i'm sure you will find out if they affect the outcome of my application in the next few days.....or weeks.
i would not advise anyone to try and cover up any old convictions.

Its quite uncanny, how years ago you needed convictions to get in , and then in the late 60s you needed just a Tenner.
I kinda get the feeling OZ are becoming " PICKY " !
And ffs aint you had any post yet ?
