Anyone from the UK heading for NORTH QUEENSLAND?

we are awaiting our PR Visa, that all being well should with us in Feb/March. We originally planned to settle in the Melbourne suburbs near my relations, however we also love North Queensland and have been considering the possibility of bailing out of the rat race and setting up near Cairns or Townsville.

Anyone else aready done this?.

I guess you have obviously been around that area and it is very nice and as
you say "out of the rat race" I hope you have taken into account things like
the weather for it is a pretty dramatic change from mild UK to extremes of
heat and humidity and massive downpours of rain during the wet summer months
then there are the stingers in the water for part of the year which will
most certainly stop you from swimming (if you enjoy that).....I don't want
to talk you out of that area I just want you to be aware that's all, I spent
quite a bit of time in that area in the Australian Army so I have an idea.

Whatever you choose I hope it is right for you.

Thanks for your reply Robert.

Yes, weve been up their a couple of times now and also got married on the beach at Kewarra, North of Cairns.

To be honest this website has put me off a little going to melbourne and the likes, their seem to be so many unhappy expats on this ssite. Is this a fair reflection ???.

Im currently a display designer and last february I went to see a company in Melbourne, just to show my portfolio, evrything was great, but was gutted when we talked money and could only offer me between $35-45.

I'm now seriously considering getting qualified in I.T. here in the UK and then in a few years fast tracking through and hopefully earn a better salary. The money on offer in my industry seems to be dire over there.

Not sure where we go from here.

Well if you have been there before a few times you will be well aware of the
points I have brought up so that's a good start, although I live on the Gold
Coast if I was to live in a major City it would be Melbourne, depends what
you are after in life I guess but having a bit of acreage and being so close
to the beach and some great facilities here is hard to beat. You need to be
aware that wages here in Australia are not at the level of those in the UK
however the cost of living is approximately 70% of that in the UK also so
it's a relative thing really and to me the lifestyle can outweigh the
variance in wages. As far as your particular "trade" is concerned I do not
know what demand there is but I would have thought such demand would be
diminished in smaller cities, would you work for yourself "freelance" while
attaining IT quals, from what I've read the IT market in Australia is
somewhat crowded as well, sorry to be a wet blanket but I would much prefer
people to come here prepared than be pushing a barrow up a hill. You are
aware that the fast tracking of IT applicants now recently ceased due to the
crowding I mentioned in that area......have you thought of developing your
design skills to encompass other areas?

Re: Anyone from the UK heading for NORTH QUEENSLAND?

Thanks again for your post Robert.

Would you have any idea of occupations that are in demand in particular for Queensland. I'm quite happy to re-train for another occupation.

Your quite right of course, money is not the be all in life. I know that in material terms we would be poor living up in the Cairns area, but we both just love it so much up their that material posessions would not matter too much. I guess as long as you have food in your belly a warm dry house and a motor to get you from a to b should suffice.

Any idea where i could find out if their is any particular occupations in demand for Queensland in particular?.

Thanks again

Neil. (65 million)
