Question anyone taken there car to Oz

Did you take your car & was it worth it or best to buy in Oz, We was thinking of getting a deal on a new Toyota truck here in the UK then shipping it.

Has anyone looked into this or done it?

Any help is much appreciated

Cheers

Hi Phil,

It has been discussed a lot. We still plan on taking ours but you must have owned the vehicle for 12 months at least beforehand.

Check out this thread.

what happens if you have not owned the car 12 months???

I sold my good car recently as hadn't planned to take it but have since bought an old banger for £600, having seen same car costs $8000 in Oz I'm thinking - hang on might be worth sending this!!?

But will have only had the banger 7 months when we go now!

Its not worth it. It could cost thousands to compliance it and still books are so important with used cars in Australia. If you do sell it being from the UK it won't be worth the normal resale value of similar car in Australia.

You won't get an import permit for it if it's less than 12 months old.

I think I'll ship mine over for 2-3k.

low mileage, and at least it's a model you'd get here so won't be stung on a service.

Does the £2-3k include Freight, Insurance, Customs duties and taxes, Wharf fees, Transport charges, Steam Cleaning, General processing charges, etc...?

In March we bought a 7 seater Hyundai Santa Fe 2.7 Auto Petrol with 90,000kms for $12,000 from a dealer with 5 years warranty.

Shipping fees ro-ro - £1300 incl steam cleaning. I calulated a while back about £3000 in total incl customs and other fees according to Big Ape's spreadsheet.

If you can suggest I can buy a similar model like your Santa Fe for considerably less than $20000, then I will think again as it will be a a mission to ship it.

We seemed to drop on the Santa Fe, but it is a 2002 model (not a nice new one). I think there are good buys, you just have to look around.

Have a look at http://www.carsales.com.au/

Thanks, yes I have had a look on there.

What I'll do is put a classified listing on eBay as there a quite a few on there, but with much more mileage e.g. > 40000 miles, and see if anyone bites.

If I come away with a smallish loss, then it may be better to do it the hassle free way and sell it here. Then I could buy new there or something. We will need two cars anyway so will have to buy something as soon as we arrive.
