Question Is anyone shipping their car out to oz????

Hi all,

I've just had a shipping guy come round to do us a quote and he reckons that the cost between a 20 and 40 container is a couple of hundred quid so reckons it may well be worth my while in taking my car with us, whilst this is an option that my mum has been banging on about I really thought it would just be more hassle so I was just wondering if there was anyone else out there that has already looked into taking their car with them or if anyone out there has any thought on the matter!!

I look forward to hearing from you................

We considered taking our cars over to Oz as the same cars were worth more in Oz than they were in the UK. However it all depends what car it is and if it will qualify for the "Luxury Car Tax". This tax is based on the value of the car and not the type of car it is - so for example if you own an old Mercedes S-class it may not qualify, but you may have a brand new Ford Mondeo which will due to the value!! We decided against it as the way the cars were to be valued is not an exact science and we felt that we may have ended up with a bigger than expected Customs Duty bill and GST bill.

What car is it and how old? Also does it have air con? If it's something really nice then it may be worth it, but consider availability of parts and servicing etc.

Hi thanks for your reply!

It's a Merc A class and it's nearly 5 years old now and it does have air con. It's an alright car but i wouldn't class it as anything super duper. Thing is second hand cars are pretty pricey in oz and I know it will be a long long time before we will be able to afford anything decent out there so am just trying to ponder the pros and cons really and obviously it's nice to get as many opinions and as much advise as poss

I'm looking to take my Mercedes C270. It's only a year old so don;t really want to lose it. I read in last months Australia & New Zealand magazine a case study of a couple of recently moved to Brisbane. It cost them $7000 to take their Audi into Australia.

I'm just concerned about the cost of services as the parts are also likely to be taxed highly.

Cheers for that I've had a look and the value of it looks pretty much the same as here so to make life easier I might just aswell sell it here, TRY and put the money to one side and see what I can but over there instead. Sounds good in theory but will see when we get there!!!!
Thanks a lot for your help, slightly better advice seeing as I don't even have a cat to worry about bbqing!!!!!!!!

Hi
We are thinking what to do with our car too. It is an Audi A3 Sportback sports model with leather, climate control the lot. We love the car and can't decide if it is worth our while keeping it and shipping it over. We have said what ever we get for it in the UK we will spend on a car over there but whether or not that will happen is a different matter. It wuld probably sell for £16000 (have lost a lot of money on it just in 18 months!) so does anyone know if we would have to pay a big chunk of tax if we took it with us???
Thanks

Does anyone know how you can find out an approximate 'duty' to be paid for importing your car? Is there an Aus. gov website that explains any of this?

I have a 12 seat landrover 110 which with 7 of us, I hate to flog off.

Try this: http://www.karmanshipping.co.uk/australia/WebCalcs.xls

and this - the government website: http://www.dotars.gov.au/transreg/str_imp-cert.aspx

There are a couple of other issues to consider -

- Personal imported motor vehicles are much harder and more expensive to insure than Australian cars.
- The resale value of a personal import might not be as high as the same car imported by a main dealer.
- Modifications may have to be made to the car eg changing instruments from miles to kilometres.

Cheers

Nice Car. Audis are pretty expensive over here which is strange as VWs are not (probably cheaper than UK) & they are basically the same company. Personally I'd sell it but it is quite specialised so might be worth shipping over. We looked into it & it is a lot of hassle though. The guy at Karman shipping was really helpful & told me it was not worth shipping our Rav4 thereby doing himself out of some business. I'm glad we didn't bring it as we have now bought ourselves a new Golf 2.0l TDi & are in the market for a 4x4 ute.
