We're with Mutual Community and they seem fine. In the end I went with them as the woman who explained their cover to me was very helpful and half the Aussie mums I asked at school were with them , it was a bloomin nightmare trying to compare them all.

These guys - http://www.iselect.com.au/ were also very helpful.

We've plumbed for NIB. One of the 'plusses' in SA is that there aren't any 'preferred providers' - so we can go to whatever dentist etc we want. With the extras cover we get 65% of the cost back.

I've started to look at this and we will need to cough up $200-$250 per month for anything worth while, 2 adults and 3 kids.......as you say it's a minefield and certainly worth the effort of looking at all options

We are with Medibank Private but not made a claim yet after 18 months. Premiums are about $200 pcm for top hospitals and extra but work pays $90 towards it. That makes it 30% less than the levy surcharge (we earn over $100K between us) if we didn't have any cover at all so it is a no brainer for us.

I found it better to actually talk to someone at iselect - they rang me after I requested it on their website. They came up with recommendations based on our actual circumstances and so did Mutual Community and Medibank when I went to their offices. They all recommended the same level of cover for us (and not the top levels).

Still not sure we've done the right thing but we're all due a visit to the dentist soon so will actually make a claim. Also I'm 47 so we wanted to take hospital cover out right away so that we didn't get the age levy.

We're with AHM but went through i-select to choose it. There are loads of pages but you just have to pick one that gives the best coverage in the areas you specify and of course price has a part to play. Just make sure you take out bits that really aren't necessary for you to have, otherwise you may end up paying for things that aren't applicable to your situation, e.g. hip ops or pregnancy related cover.
Ours is $141 a month for 2 adults but we're paying about 8% surcharge as we're both over 30 We have got hospital cover with extras.
