It was always a given that meat in the UK was ridiculously expensive compared to Australia. To my surprise a quick check of the ASDA site shows, per kilo:
Pork Loin Chops $9.70
Pork Mince $9.20
Chicken Breast Fillets $15.25
Short Cut smoked bacon $12.25
All the above cheaper if you buy 3 packs. As in Australia no doubt there are cheaper and dearer options, but comparing ASDA to most Australian supermarkets, these seem equivalent to Coles prices - I do all the shopping and cooking - in fact Coles own brand bacon in smaller packs such as the ASDA ones are over $16 a kilo for bacon and the loin chops are currently about $14.

Pork is expensive in comparison, like spare ribs, so I don't buy them that often anymore. Beef on the other hand, I do.

.. I'm earning an aussie wage (ok..its a bloody pittance working in research as opposed to nursing).... earning aussie dollars... spending those dollars in Australia...
if I was in the uk... I'd be earning a pommie wage... which would be lkess than the pittance I get now...
so really... apart from lusting after decent and cheap beer on holiday... whether the cost of living is high in Australia or not makes no difference...
so long as I can pay my bills

Yes, how pommie aged pensioners survive on their ninety quid a week is beyond me.

Uk standard single person pension is around £110. If there is no other income, pension credit will be added to give minimum income of around £150 week. On top of this, you would be able to claim housing benefit in rented accommodation, council tax benefit, and some others depending on circumstances.
