Re: Anyone Quitting Aus due to High Cost of Living
An average of 10.5% per year, definitely higher than wages have risen.
That's a much bigger average annual jump than up here in Brisbane, assuming the same size flat.
2007 saw the big rise in rents in the Shire though.
From 2003 to 2006 the average rose by a total of $40pw from $340 to $380, but in the next year to Dec 2007 it jumped $60 to $440pw. Not sure what the average is now.

£50k is 2.18 times the average UK wage, according to www.statistics.gov.uk,
and 2.18 times the average QLD wage would be $145,000, so your guestimate is not too far off.

Saw it on TV last night that soon we'll be paying $20 for a kilo of bananas. At current exchange rates that'll work out at close to £3 per banana!

Fruit/veg is very seasonal here, so it's just something you get used to (well some of us do )

Don't see much imported food at all. US cherries are about the only exception to that.
All the old answers as to why still apply... we are a long way from anywhere, distances in Australia are huge, small population, yadda yadda yadda....

Every time there is a weather event, food prices soar. Yes you would expect a rise in some instances, but Coles and woolworth have such a monopoly they just take the piss.

Just want to add my two cents in - I think Australia's a bit pricey... but oh man, just so worth it! Is nothing like the UK and that's a price I'm will to pay for!
