Isn't 30k Gbp better than 65k AUD?

Electrical engineers in Perth are on AUD150-350k

With the rule of thumb 2.5 cost of living comparison. Wouldn't you give up 30k in the UK only if you could see at least 2.5 that in Oz? ie 75k Am I being a berk?

I agree. Maybe we are both berks.

I didn't get Ozzie's comment as he seemed to be suggesting that it was great to be able to go from ~ £30k to $65k.

(I was baffled by Ozze's comment, not yours, I re-read my words and they were not clear).

One can always return to or stay in the UK where public money (your taxes) is spent so productively http://goo.gl/Z1B22

30K GBP = 46,000 AUD So after 5 years in london Circa 30K was the best she could do... Starting up as a newcomer (albeit aussie born and bred) She started on a clear AUD 19K more.... or 25 pct more.

The Cost of Living in London and Melbourne is similar.....

Actually most mining prffessionals are a lot better off working in the UK and doing fifo to Africa. Salaries are 50-75% more than Oz and tax free

If, and it's a big if, you want to work in Africa that is.

But that implies that without the last few years currency anomaly she's valued considerably lower in Oz.

I think you'll find that over the years the historical exchange rate balances out around 2 dollars = 1 Pound... the largest anomaly was when it was +2.40 to 1 pound. That was historically unprecedented... whereas we have been close to the current situation before back in 1973.

Whatever conversion ratio suits you is the one to use.

There are many ways to slice and dice this and opinions are like assholes etc on this topic.

Oh dear. You must have missed the bazillions of threads warning newcomers not to assume the current, historically low exchange rate is a good way to gauge salary.

Yes if I were transferring £30k of cash over to Australia today I would indeed get $46k. But is it comparable as a salary? Well £30k is over the national average, whereas $46k is considerably below ... there is a clue there.
