Just to add to your list - I phone, I pad and any other smart phone for that matter. Not made in the UK by any means but the low consumption cpu's that make them do their stuff run on licensed designs from ARM and Imagination technologies, both based in Cambridge.

You hear news like Ford stopping car production in the UK but nobody hears of the millions they invested into engine production and design at Bridgend, Wales and Dagenham diesel. These engines are exported all over the world. You don't hear that all Toyota Avensys and Auris sold in Europe are made in Derby or Civics made in Swindon and now for the latest model Astra's will be exported from Ellsmere port for the EU market. I nearly forgot Mini's from Oxford.
Sure, but please compare this to what the UK USED to make - even, say 20-30 years ago.

It would make frightening reading

Come on down Maggie Thatcher.... she destroyed more manufacturing in the UK than the Germans managed in WWII

She just got in before the Chinese!

Look at the cars British Leyland were making - they destroyed themselves!

What she did to the Miners should almost be seen as an act of treason. Lets get the facts straight... It was pure revenge over the Miners strike and the consequent 3 day week circa 73, which caused the Heath Government to fall. She felt the miners had to much power and acted accordingly. Nothing to do with the financial future of Britain at all, pure ice cold revenge and payback. Which started a ball rolling against anything to do with a strong union base. The only bona fide attack on the Unions was Fleet Street.... you cant stop automation.

If anyone says, the consequence of her actions had nothing to do with the GFC and its impact on the UK was unstoppable. take a look at GERMANY !

When the money went out of England to Poland for the replacement Coal it was gone forever... The extra cost of the UK Coal mostly stayed in the financial circuit in the UK as it was spent there.

Germany might be having a growth spurt...but in the worst GFC year its economy shrank virtually the same amount as the UK. It does seem to have been able to dramatically turn around it's unemployment situation though.

Average growth in the 2003-2011 period.

UK: 2.1% per year
GER: 0.9% per year (same number for France, they manufacture lots too, right?)

You're wrong, those two example IP companies I mentioned receive royalties and licence payments, they pay staff in the UK to design products and pay UK taxes.

Sure, there's some benefit, but China/Taiwan (wherever they are made) gain the most. I reckon the UK needs to go back to a majority manufacturing based economy in order to sort itself out - relying on banking/finance has not worked.

But how does it compete with Asians earning a few dollars a day?

Go high-tech. Make the things they themselves can't make.

It works for Germany and Japan.

The UK education system is not up to it yet (not enough engineering/science, too much arts) but they could make it so.

I refer the honourable gentleman to the numbers above.

0.9% gdp growth per annum over the last 9 years. Tiny bit more for Japan.

Details.

Drive through Germany (I did last year), the Ruhr cities, see how many factories there are - the same with Japan. Then take a drive through the Midlands of England - it's ex-industrial heartland..........
