Anyone Living in Mackay?

yes your right, very hot in summer and humid
Been living in Mackay for 2 years. Be aware that if you have not been to regional queensland before then you are in for a surprise. Mackay is not like any city in the UK.
Mackay has a beautiful coast and surrounding areas, but you can feel quite isolate. Rockhampton over 3 hours south and Airlie beach 1.5 hrs north.
As for entertainment in Mackay it is very scarce.
Also search for houses before leaving the uk as Mackay is a town in the middle of a mining boom and rent can be quite expensive.
Beautiful place to live but no major shopping centres or attractions.

i got offered a job in Mackay and also in brisbane, Townsville and Cairns..wasn't mad about Brisbane, The employer wasn't right in Townsville and that left mackay and Cairns. We spent a few days in Mackay and didn't really get a feel for the place. that doesn't mean you won't. the town is pretty, the beaches to the north are really nice..Bucasia beach is lovely..but there are creeks running out to the beach so crocs nearby...some lovely housing if you want to buy but very expensive rentals due to miners renting everywhere and being able to afford high rents.
It felt too small for us..we are both 40, not total party animals but like live bands, a good restaurant etc and didn't feel it had anything to offer in that respect..it felt isolated...a long, long drive to anywhere bigger.
We did, however meet some lovely locals, one who fixed our hire car (that some hoon drove into and left it that way) and delivered it back to the rental agency whilst we were in cairns by then...yes we trusted him and he did a fab job (cheaper than excess rip off car rental wanted to charge us..beware of Eurpcar unless you ahve a lot of money to go for no excess option when you rent one). A freind of mine is moving there soon and am sure she will settle o.k as not into going out too much....you cana lways move on if it soesn't suit you but everyone likes different things...otherwise we would all be living in one city!
Moving to cairns by the way, loved the place..crocs and humidity too.!
