anyone know what the various classes are on airlines ?
I've been looking at flights to Oz, singapore do a 'M' class service which is standard service...I think
BA have got a 'L' and 'V' class and an 'S' from Quantas.
The 'L' is £100 dearer for us to travel, is it any different to 'M' ?

G'day
I think they are all types of economy so the service will be the same. The difference will be in the terms and conditions, some "classes" are more changeable than others.

I've had a search on BA but cant find anywhere where it states what the abbreviations mean.

First Class Examples: A, F
Business Class Examples: C, D, J
Economy Class Examples: H, K, L, M, O, N, S, V, Q & others
Depending on how much your fare has been discounted this will correspond to how flexible your ticket is, eg if you can change dates, names on tickets, open return etc. Generally the cheaper the fare the more restrictions on changes to your travel.
Some airlines may use different codes to denote various fares, worth giving BA a call to ask what the restrictions are on the fares you have been quoted.

frequent flyer points = the loyalty program of the airline. If you join the program you get points every time you fly and then when you have enough you can use them to get flights etc.

Here's an entry on Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Travel_class
and here's a list of fare classes used by Virgin Atlantic/Virgin Blue/Virgin America:
http://v-flyer.com/codes.asp
Most airlines use similar codes.

QNATAS and BA (and various other airlines) are affiliated to the same frequent flyer programs. Emirates and Vrigin are linked in a different program.
If you are moving to Oz then internal flights are dominated by Qantas (inclding Jetstar) and Virgin.
If (for example) you flew here from UK on BA or Qantas you would probably collect just about enough points to get a free interstate domestic flight in Oz. If you travel with Emirates then make sure you have joined Virgin's Velocity program in advance. You can then collect your points onto Virgin (instead of Emirates) which may be more useful for you.
