Default Anyone in Kalgoorlie

G,day all

We have chosen Kalgoorlie as a possible destination. Before we make our final descision we would like a breakdown of the monthly expenses( rent, groceries etc).We would like to to hear from people living in Kalgoorlie or who have lived there or work there.

Also could you tell us what are the job prospects.I am a qualified General electrician with 20 years experience in Industrial, commercial, domestic and Gold surface mining.

Please can we have answers only from people who have experienced life in Kalgoorlie as we would like to hear it from the horses mouth.

Cheers

I have been there camping with my son..... it was bloody hot! 47 degrees all day and didn't cool off until about 3.00am, then it was too hot again by 7.00am so had to get out of the tent. Worse night sleep ever.

Having said that, enjoyed our stay. I would describe 'Kal' as a town in the desert. They get their water from a reservoir just out side Perth, which to this day is the longest mains water supply in the world.

The community is very transient with a number of people living in trailers and working in the various mines, mostly gold I believe.
There are some mines which have shut down recently and I would imaging those laid off will be chasing the few jobs still available at the remaining mines sites.... (just my guess)

Hope that helps, I was only there a few days, but it is as I saw it.

I'm guessing that you're wanting to work in the mines, I don't think many would go there if it weren't for that.

We thought about it, briefly, and then decided we'd rather do fly in fly out than live that far from civilization. But that's just us. I would definitely not make any firm decisions until you visit. In the end my husband got a city job in Brisbane so no FIFO for us!

I should note that I've never visited, only researched briefly when my husband was looking into areas to live for mining.
