Britz/Maui, Apollo and Kia are the three big guys for motor homes.

If you want a smaller camper then google Wicked Campers, Backpacker Campers (part of Britz), Hippie Campers and a few others. These tend to be used by back packers so the condition can be lets say at best 'not so good'.

We have found that going through somebody like http://www.campertravel.com.au/ is cheaper and more things are included than going direct to Britz etc.

Hi Ruskee,
We hired from Britz for four weeks, we hit a few problems and had to travel back to Brisbane to get things sorted, but on the whole they were fine and the motor home was great for seeing everything you need to. We travelled from surfers up to Cairns then flew back to Brisbane, which was great to look at the different states, it gave us a clearer picture of where we wanted to be. Good luck

I am looking into this option as temporary furnished aprtments are SO expensive!
Where can you legally park and leep in them - apart from campsites??!

Where are you looking to stay when you arrive?

We hired a motorhome when we travelled around for a couple of months (Auto Sleepers) but sorted out furnished houses when we arrived to live via local real estate agents which was more settling for us and the kids. Have you looked at Stayz, realholidays.com.au and domain holidays?

When we were in New Zealand, it was easy to park up in various places but for some reason, we did not find that as easy out here (more than likely as we had two children then!) and tended to opt for caravan parks with easier facilities including water, emptying facilities etc.

You may also find that you may be entitled to rent assistance. You may also be able to negotiate cheaper rates for a longer stay in a holiday type rental.

Good luck,
Nina

I'd avoid Wicked campers. Notorious for breaking down.

Going to Sydney - Eastern Suburbs so not many campsites round there!
Need to be fairly close too as I'll be househunting and school organising and after a few weeks will be starting work.
Have looked at stayz and realholidays, but the prices are just so high! Think I'm just going to have to deal with it!...

Thumbs up Re: Anyone hired a Motor Home?

Actually we used wicked van and drove from cape Tribulations to Brisbane and stopped where ever we wanted...nobody objected! we just had problem once and we called the 24hr wicked van support number somewhere near a small town (cant remember the name..some numbers - 1786..?) So someone came towed our camper and repaired it in his garage!..and it worked!! So, personally i liked them.

But if you are plannin to live in australia maybe its a better idea to buy one- second hand...try the gumtree site(brisbane, Sydney, Adelaid etc) They have some second hand campers which look good. We are planning to do this once we arrive in australia next year(if everything works out), we will drive from perth to Brisbane..2 months and take our time before deciding where to live :-)
So excited cant wait!!!
Please try YHA site..smetimes they have good deals for longterm.
Best of luck!

We hired in January for a month from a small outfit called Go Vans (govans.com.au). They were competitively priced - we had a large 6 berth for the price of a 4 berth, including full insurance / CDW / camping gear etc. Very good service, available all over Australia.

I made enquiries to many suppliers (including Britz, Kea etc.) and then played them off against each other to get the best quote ('Britz quoted me $X for the month... can you beat that?' sort of thing).

As for where to stay - campsites with full facilities (power / water) are very cheap, and will offer lower rates if you stay longer. We stay at these because of the facilities for our kids.

I think that you would be surprised...there are small ones if you know where to look.

There is a Big4 at Parklea

The National Parks have a good one in Lane Cove. You can walk it to the station and two or three stops you are in CBD. they also rent out cabins etc.

Agree with previous post - Lane Cove was the first campsite we stayed in in Oz! They will give you lower rates if you stay for longer.....

Also, if you get BIG4 membership you will save 10% (up to $30 / night) on their rates.....membership costs $40 / yr.
