But here we are with Commonwealth (for the moment anyway ) so don't have to deal with that just have to deal with them . I didn't realise that banks used them over here, is it only the HSBC or other banks as well?

do the banks charge you for them?
the proper secure ones (from companies such as RSA) cost around $500 each, and they expire (can't be reused, have to throw them away). i'm on my second one, which i use for external (internet) access into the banks internal (private) network.

We got one, haven't set it up yet though(busy packing...argh.... keys tomorrow, moving saturday...!!).
For our Rabobank (dutch) account, we have a much better device though. You have to put your bank card in it, type in pin number, and it generates a number, which you type into the website.
Then, before you make a transfer/payment, you have to do it again.

They're both RSA Securid cards - first one about as big as a key-ring. The second once is credit card sized and needs a PIN to be keyed into it.
They were both supplied to me for nothing - had no idea they cost so much!

I got one from HSBC yesterday. At first glance I thought it was a keyring. I have not had chance to use it yet, or read up how to use it! I am all for internet security etc but it just seems like its another thing to carry around and add clutter to my life, and I have enough of that already.

Like most of us I have dozens of bank and other website PINs/security phrases etc. Even if I could actually remember them all, I certainly can't remember which ones correspond to which accounts - so I have to write them down. Which is exactly what you shouldn't do!
I do make a point of writing them down in my own code but according to some banks even that is a no-no.
They are incapable of understanding that, in the real world, their customers are dealing with many other institututions, and not just them!
