Nattyocean - thanks for info. If you lived in Booral would the mosquitos be a problem if you were outside using your pool. I was wondering why none of the properties for sale in the area had pools, although some really great house prices. We've got young kids so wouldn't want to live in an area where mozzies would be a problem. They also love me and I'd problably be walking around like a big red spot after they had breakfast lunch and dinner on me!!

No it's the Roy Rufus Artificial Reef locally referred to as the "Arti" It's just to the East of Big Woody Island between there & Fraser Island. Have a look here
I used to fish up there once a fortnight now I tend to fish a little closer to my end of the Sandy Straits, there's not much in the drive as it's about an hour to the H Bay & an hour to Tin Can Bay from my place. TCB has a wash down area to flush the motor with fresh water, more important to me now I own a bigger more expensive motor

Yeah the mozzies love a bit of foreign blood- my OH was eaten alive on Fraser - Lake McK by the horse flies and the barge area by the Mozzies- and the repellant was like lolly water for them! Never had a problem with them myself.

Not really sure why lack of pools- did a quick search on google and a couple around the Booral region with pools however all seemed to be priced well over 1/2 million! It may have something to do with not having town water available out there previously (is now available) and having to install septic systems as well! just a cost thing maybe!

And hey they wouldn't be a problem, if you just stayed under the water!

Mu husband and son have just returned from a weekend on Fraser and were both bitten to bits, even with mozzie repelent on.

Urangan, Foreshore Drive area is also big on sand flies. I walk my dog down the beach there every morning and have to spray up before I leave home. Just a case of remembering too do it.

One of the reasons houses in the older outlying areas don't have pools is due in part to the lack of water to fill them & keep them topped up. Anyone living on tank water a few years ago thought it madness to contemplate having a pool. When we bought, just 5 years ago, local real estate agents still regarded having a pool in tank water areas a negative selling point.
Recent interstate migration & the huge increase in housing costs mean these once cheaper areas are now populated by different socio-economic groups that require all mod cons including a pool, it's not really a problem if you install sufficient storage capacity & your roof area is capable of actually filling that capacity.
Funny how things change in just a few years.

Didn't think of it in that way. So, would you be filling your pool with rainwater direct from a tank stored in your garden? Is there no piped water in the area?

Initially you pay for a water tanker to deliver the first fill, then top up with your own supply from your rainwater tanks. Some folks buy a 1mx1mx1m plastic water carrier on a trailer & visit the nearest town with a reticulated supply to fill up when times get very dry.
A couple of the places in Booral we've tiled have had no reticulated supply, one had a bore for general irrigation & tanks for potable water, the other just had a 5000 gallon underground tank & a 10000 above ground one.
If the property your looking at describes the number of tanks it's a fair bet there's no "town water" available at the address.

Well it looks like (part of) the contents of this thread have made it into a local Hervey Bay newspaper.

I have lived in HB for 19 years and love it! A great place to raise a family. I have 3 kids who were all born and bred here. The pace is a lot slower than most large UK and Aussie cities, and all the essential facilities are here.

Really the only people who should not live in Hervey Bay are those with serious on-going medical/health conditions, as the hospitals - while very good - do not have the full range of specialist services.

I would not recommend Booral or River Heads areas (suburbs of HB) due to sandflies/midges (note that these are NOT mosquitos) which frequent there at different times. They are very small, barely visible flies that bite any bare skin. HB has plenty of other beautiful areas to choose from, including many with sea views, or larger allotments, up to 1 acre. Property prices are very attractive.

HB does have employment prospects. Anyone with a mainstream university degree or a trade qualification should have no problem finding work in HB. I personally employ 11 people in HB and I am looking for number 12.

Hello to all, I wanted to add my 2 cents worth after reading about this thread in the local free newspaper. I have lived in Hervey Bay since 1979 and married a 4th generation Hervey Bay local. We have2 kids now 16 and 19. None of whom have been bored with the lifestyle. We run our own residential building business and have lived both in town and now about 8 minutes from the CBD in beautiful Dundowran Beach.

Our community has just announced an $800 million upgrade to our boat harbour marina, our shopping centres are going through expansions with another one on the way. We have both private and medical facilities as well as very good private and public schools.

The community feeling is amazing with both kids being involved in Scouts, and my daughter is now involved with Riding for the Disabled. My son has landed a fantastic job since leaving school, and my daughter is working towards her Cert II in agriculture, specialising in horse breeding. My neice is working on her Cert 111 in Child care. Both are in Senior at High School. My neice moved here from the Gold Coast. She goes back occassionally for a visit, but is happy here. Our friends all have terrific careers, and few have moved away.

Soccer is HUGE here. we have a fantastic couple of golf courses. Restaurants are great and the weather is perfect. What more can i say. Give Hervey Bay a chance to win your hearts.

Just wanted to add another thought. Our beaches are some of the safest in Australia. Yes we have life guards in summer. And if anyone wants any info on areas to stay away from (given that this comes from 4 generations living in Hervey Bay since) please feel free to PM me and i will be happy to advise.
