Try the usual suspect flight center etc.
However - try www.zuji.com.au consistantly the lowest price online and have travelled through them 3 times to the UK.
Do get a bench mark first by checking with the airlines directly on the net. Malaysian especially (bigger economy seat pitch than the rest and the site fares are cheaper than the fares of travel agents usually).

You gotta do a LOT of research!
Check the usual suspects for fares and schedules:
www.webjet.com.au
www.zuji.com
www.bestflights.com.au
and of course the airlines direct...
If you really want to penny-pinch though you might consider breaking the journey. It might be cheaper to buy a return to Singapore, Bangkok or HongKong and then another return from there (i.e. in SIN$, THB or HK$) - than it is to buy the ticket all in one go (even for the same planes and same airline!) - I'm not sure about Sydney - but from Brisbane its like this:
BNE-LHR(QA/BA) = $3000
BNE-HKG(QA) = $1300
HKG-LHR(BA)= $1200 (after currency conversion)
Significant savings to be made and uses exactly the same flights!!
Remember your frequent flyer things (assuming you're a member) - return to London will earn you 20,000 points and the fare ~$3000 will add a few more (with the right credit card) - so dont dismiss QA/BA simply because they're rubbish - that 23,000 earned is effectively 20% of your next return trip!
If you've got points to redeem but not enough to get to LHR, consider using them to get to SEAsia and purchase your return from there....
You might be able to use Tiger/Jetstar/AirAsiaX/AirMacau etc etc to get to SEAsia more cheaply - (AirMacau you'd need to catch the short ferry to HongKong to continue on to UK!). This might end up being more hassle than its worth though and the lack of FF points might scare you off!

Lowest fares I can see are on Virgin (to London) at about $2200. Consider Etihad as well though, you can get to Dublin in one stop with them via Abu Dhabi - anything that removes Heathrow from the trip is a good thing!

We just booked flights Syd to Heathrow through www.statravel.com.au its a student travel company but you dont need to be a student to use them. We spoke to a girl called Bonnie.
Got flights 20 Nov to 14 Dec with Korean Airlines for $1900 each. Best we could find anywhere else was $2300.
We will need a stop-over in Korea on the way there as its 19hrs between flights (Bonnie is sorting this out too) but only 2hr stop on the way back.

I got the price off zuji as a benchmark and found a better price in shop with Flight Centre. I also found that it was significantly cheaper to fly back from Paris rather than Heathrow so we went to see friends there as well and it costs us almost nothing extra.

If you are flying direct i.e. no stopover in Asia go for one of the airlines that spends the minimum time re-fueling in Singapore/Bangkok/HK etc. Otherwise you are hanging around the airport for hours. I'd prefer to pay a bit extra to avoid that. But I prefer to have a couple of nights stopover, preferably in HK so I can fly with Cathay Pacific.

Another cheap way (presumably it's a return trip, not a one-way flight?) is to get an 'around the world' ticket. If you're on a very tight timescale it's probably not to your advantage...but not only is it often the cheapest way to travel on long-haul flights, you can take in some interesting stop-overs if you choose....and you get a shed-load of airmiles too for your preferred airline, even if you're flying with another carrier in the same alliance! You can't normally 'back-track' and have to go in the same direction around the world but can choose which direction to take.
The idea is that you fly with a combination of carriers in the same 'alliance' so you could fly with say, BA, Qantas, Cathay Pacific, Japan Airlines and American Airlines in the same itinerary as they're all in the 'OneWorld' alliance. For example you could fly:
Sydney (SYD) to Singapore (SIN)
Singapore (SIN) to London Heathrow (LHR)
London (LHR) to Los Angeles (LAX)
Los Angeles (LAX) to Sydney (SYD)
but of course there are other cities you could choose to fly into....

If you would like to fly with the 'Star Alliance' airlines you can choose airlines such as Singapore Airlines, Thai, ANA, Air New Zealand, Lufthansa etc:

The other major airline alliance is 'SkyTeam' (not the nicest airlines though, in my opinion!).
