Anyone emigrated over 40

Im 43 shortly and will be 44 when I will moving over (hopefully!!). I'm constsntly being told that I'm mad as I have a well paid job and will be on about £20k / year worse off in Aus and that's if I can get a job! With 3 kids and a wife who will not be working, as she needs to look after the kids, I'm now beginning to have second thoughts. Just wondering if anyone else has moved over being of a similar age and whether they have regreted the move.

Hi

I'm in th same dilemma. I too am 44, I also have 457 visa almost completed and a firm job offer in Sydney.

I am constantly comparing the good life I have here in the UK with what's on offer in Oz. I'm not blind I have been 4 times and love the place but I am not convinced I will be any better off as the cost of living in Oz seems higher.

Very soon I'm going to have to make a decision...do stay with a good and well paid job which I've been in for 20 years with family and friends around or should I throw caution to the wind and go. It'd doing my head in.

Perhaps I'm going through a mid life crisis or realisation .

Apologies if I'm not being much help, however your not the only one in the same boat.

Cheers

Re: Anyone emigrated over 40

[I]'m 40 and will probably be about 43 when we hopefully emigrate. I suppose you have to look at the reasons as to why you want to move to Oz. If you decided not to go and don't go through with the visa app how would you feel? Or if in a few years time and not eligible for a visa would you feel then when you had no chance of ever moving there. Would you have a lot of what if's?? Have you been to Oz before? What is it about Oz that draws you to it. I suppose you could weigh up the pros and cons. If you're still undecided you could still apply for the visa, validate it and at least you have the option of a few more years to make up your mind. If you leave it too late you won't have that option. Hope this helps. All I know is that all the times I have spent in Oz only reinforced my decision. I'll be going as a single mum, and I can't pretend that it's going to a picnic, but I'll take the rough with the smooth because I know it's the right decision for me and my daughter.

Gents
I left secure job at 42 to give it a go, my thoughts were if it fails I and my family will have had an experience that few get. I arrived on a 457 and now am a PR we love it the girls (12 and16) have blossomed as people doing drama debating sports. The decider for me was if we made a go of it I would be giving THEM a better life when they grow up I am not bagging UK but I see the long term being better in Oz for my kids

Your comments are all much appreciated and reinforce my wishes and beliefs. There is always the possibility of returning although I don't want to go there. My wife thinks she has the dream home and is emigrating without ever being there - her trust is basically in me as I have been before and loved it - she aint as keen (understandably so).
It would be interesting to here further comments, especially from someone down under.
Thanks

Most Poms we have made friends with over here i would say 80% are over 40 i always ask the question is their anyone under 40 still migrating. I'm sure 40-45 is the top bracket for most landing on these shores.

Re: Anyone emigrated over 40

I was 44 and 11 months old when I sent my application in, last August. :o

I am just waiting for the visa to be granted (hopefully in the next month or so) and I will be moving to Brisbane in Spring next year, when I will be 46.

I have two kids aged 5 and 7, so I am doing this for their future, though I am looking forward to going for myself. I believe that in life you regret the things you don't do. I don't want to be sat here in 10 years time wishing I had applied for that visa when I had the chance.

It took me so long to apply for the visa because I thought it was too big a gamble for me to take now that I have young kids, but as time went on I realised that the kids were the reason i have to chance it. You only get one go at life so you have to take these chances when they arise!! :o :D

My OH will be 40 when we arrive in Perth. Sometimes we look around and think what the hell are we doing because we don't appreciate how good we have it here but then we think What the heck we only have one life and we should make the most of every opportunity that comes our way. I would rather regret what I have done than what I didn't do:)

My husband was 49 when he left for Australia on a 457 he has been there 2 years and has loads of friends, we have grown up children.

Basically we are going for the adventure the idea is to stay for 4 years then evaluate and decide whether to move back to the UK as such we are renting our house out so as not to burn bridges;)

Re: Anyone emigrated over 40

Just remember......if you are going on a temporary visa, such as the 457, it becomes increasingly difficult to get a permanent visa over the age of 45.
The 457 visa does not lead to PR....it is entirely separate.

I was 43 when we arrived. Hub was 39, nearly 40. We have had some really rough times since moving here 2 years ago, but never really regretted moving. And yes, we gave up secure, well paid jobs, beautiful house in a very good area, family, friends and all the rest.

We are nearer 50 than 40 . Also left behind good jobs and earn less here than in the UK. (Knew that would be the case before we came out.)Didn't stop us from coming here and not regretting the move.
