Anyone been to Langkawi or Penang?
We`ll be going to Perth with Malaysian Airlines, and you can stop over at the above (and KL) for no extra cost.... so which of these two would you suggest? We`ll also be staying in KL for a couple of nights seeing it`s a good opportunity.

We went to Langkawi on our Honeymoon. This (admittedly) was a few years ago now, but the island was lovely. We stayed in a beautiful resort. The only criticism I had was they were building a new airport and the sea was very churned up around our hotel - no good for snorkelling at the time! Beware mosquitoes too! Every night they used to go through the resort with smoke generators to get rid of them.
Haven't made it sound overly appealing really, have I?
In all seriousness, it was a beautiful place and I would definately return.
Happy travels!

Hi, we went to Langkawi with Malaysian Airlines about three years ago. The flight was really easy and the island very idyllic. We stayed at the Berjaya Langkawi - which has rooms on stilts. The spa was excellent!!! We'd recommend that if you did go here you book a taxi for a day. We did and our "guide" took us everywhere - shopping, beach, tourist attractions etc, for a flat fee for the whole day. Having to avoid water buffalo asleep in the middle of the road on the way back to the airport was fun!!

Went to both Langkawi and Penang years ago. Langkawi was less commercialised but they were building a new airport so it may have changed by now.
That said, a friend went there last year and reckoned it hadn't changed at all.
There's a lot of water buffalo, which were the main mode of transport until recently. They slept in a field near our room and, crikey, they can snore!

.
We have had several holidays in Langkawi at Palangi beach resort and just love it there. Lots to do and see. Lovely beaches and the staff are so friendly.
Only had one holiday to Penang and didn't enjoy it. Dirty beach, old hotel- so don't be influenced by my review!

Thanks for all the feedback. We`ve decided to spend 4 nights in Lenkawi and then 2 nights in Kuala Lampur (might as well as it`s free flights). So if anyone has any input on where to go/what to do in either for 2 adults (one 25 weeks pregnant by then) and a 12-month old girl.....

We are old Malaysia hands and would recommend Langkawi over Penang every time - especially if you just want to chill out.
Someone has mentioned the Pelangi Beach Hotel - good choice - but an even better one, and less well known, is the Casa Del Mar next to it. 30 rooms and all fronting the beach -very relaxed and friendly (and an English manager) with an excellent beach restaurant alongside it (German owned I think).
Casa Del Mar has its own website - give it a look. Can't remember if you said when you are going but check out for the Malaysian west coast monsoon. They do book up quite far in advance but you never know - there could just have been a cancellation.
Langkawi is also a duty free island. So what, you might say, but with Tiger beer in the shops at something like 20 pence a bottle/tin, no need to raid the mini bar!
Now, if you're really in the money, head to the Datai or Andaman Resort!!

my mates went to langkawi in november and loved it, breath taking pics etc. but in all seriousness, it was affected by the tsunami so dont know how it differs now or how badly it was affected, just might be something you may need to consider.

Very minor damage on its north west coast which has now been repaired. I believe there were some drownings on the islands seaward of Langkawi and these islands in themselves saved Langkawi itself from more serious flooding from the tsunami.
Both the Pelangi Beach and Casa Del Mar hotels had their pool areas floooded with seawater and sand but both are now back to their original status.
