Angry Anyone in Australia having problems ordering online in the UK for christmas gifts

Im not a happy bunny. I had seen the ideal christmas pressies on argos for my nephews on line and proceeded to order them, MIL had already said to get them delivered to her. So using my UK visa debit card i set about ordering but because i live over in oz now and my card is registered here now. I could not complete the on line form, so i phone customer services to find out why to be told the card is registered over seas so we cant accept , she put me on hold while she spoke to someone senior and i was cut off.
Ive emailed them to say how upset and unhappy i was.
I had interflora also prevent me completing an order online for flowers for my parents wedding anniversary way back in August and just thought it must of been low on funds, but now im thinking a new rule must have come in
So has any one else been having such problems?

I've never had this problem and I've ordered heaps of stuff online from the UK. Could you not just get an Aussie credit card or am I being too naive?

If all else fails I suggest you try paying through paypal. Works for me. The UK banks are a right hassle sometimes.

The woman told me on the phone they dont accept overseas registered cards, either UK or Aus. I had no problems last year. So even if my hubby used his oz credit card it would not be accepted grr

We gave up on international christmas pressies... Life is so much simpler and cheaper without them... We send small gifts back when we have visitors, but that isnt necessairly at christmas...

Did a tescos on line order for my sister last year and had no worries... Lots of treats and food goodies delivered to her door... But that was coz she had just lost her job and things werent great for her.... This year we wont coz she is in a better place....

The non present thing is reciprocated ..... A card in the post and a phonecall on the day is all we do .....

With My sisters kids we have sent the same twenty pound note back and forth to the relevant child in their card for all the kids birthdays for the last 4 years, its hilarious, she sends it back for my kids birthday.... We send it back for hers... If that ever went missing in the post I reckon the cousins would be devastated... Its a standing joke... They've all signed it... Funny as....

Unless they are HERE for christmas of their birthday... Then we get them something....

I know a lot of people go to a lot of expense, time and effort keeping up the sending of gifts.... We dont.

Here's another idea:

You can order gifts from http://www.amazon.co.uk and there is no problem with the person making the order having overseas credit cards and addresses.

I have ordered items with credit cards (and addresses) when I've been living in Singapore, Switzerland and the USA and with credit cards and billing addresses registered in those countries.

Actually just a few days ago I ordered some DVD's from Amazon UK for my sister's birthday (she lives in the Midlands). I'm currently in the USA and paid with my US registered American Express card. The items were mailed out to her within a few hours

(I've also previously ordered DVDs from the Amazon UK site to be sent to me in Singapore and the USA as the DVDs weren't available locally. No problems whatsoever - they take off the VAT so the postage charges were mitigated.)

I order stuff through UK Amazon a lot for people back home, both with Aus and UK registered cards. Never had a problem with other UK sites either, but I use a UK Credit card, not a debit card - that could be the problem.

What address did you type in? I've found in the past that online orders go through with an address that is not necessarily where the card is registered to (i.e. use UK card with Australian address, or other way round).

Things may be changing now though, haven't done that in a little while.

Ordered loads from Argos in the past and never had a problem. Also used lots of other UK sites and never had a problem

Always used an Australian Debit card

Transfer cash over to your MIL and ask her to get them for you.

That could certainly be the problem. Mandy, did you make sure the billing address was correct, ie. your Australian address that the card is registered to? I've had problems when I didn't check the billing address for my French Visa debit card and it had defaulted to the delivery address. If they are different, that could cause a problem...

same here no problems buying as long as the delivery address is where the card is registered , but when the delivery address and registered card holders address are different i have always needed to inform them this is a gift and confirm details with them later and most are not happy unless they can confirm this somehow

Well Argos have not replied to my email, but my card is registered in oz, bank is in the UK and delivary address was in uk. Even over the phone i got a big fat no. Would not accept my oz bank card either cos i asked
So will try paypal. Cant ask MIL to get them as she lives on an island in scotland and it would mean getting a ferry to Ayr and a train to Glasgow to get said gifts. Too much to expect when she aint that young. However it would have been ideal getting them delivered to her as my nephews will be spending christmas with the in laws.
