Re: Anybody else struggling in Brisbane?
Did I mention that I have a problem with names?
At least, the first letter was correct!
Now IF we were getting married and I´d still get your name wrong, then you have definately the right to blame me

So whereabouts in Europe are you from? Do you think it makes life more or less difficult for you over here compared to us Poms?

Give Melbourne a try.
I originally went to Sydney with three friends and we lived there for a few years and then we moved to Melbourne, much better and one of my friends as a Sydney girl this was yonks ago but Melbourne is just so much better. More diverse and lots of singles thirty plus etc.

I´m from Germany (ok, let´s not talk about football...)
Don´t think it would make any difference if I was British. You guys have it easier with the language, that´s all. My impression is that people from the UK are very respected here (if it comes to jobs) but I didn´t really encounter any problems being from Germany. Comes in handy sometimes if they need somebody to translate

There is something similar but it´s not as active as this website. Probably more British people here in Oz than Germans. I was curious about your opinions, just to get another perspective from fellow Europeans.

Well apart from a few games down the years I'd say your boys have more to brag about on the football side than we have.
Its interesting that you say you dont feel as though you've found it tougher than us Brits would, I would've expected there would've been quite a few cultural differences. I certainly noticed half of the TV programmes and large chunks of the news seem to come from the UK, which seems to limit the homesickness. Have you bumped into many other Germans down here?
But enough of that, you've got to let me into all the deep dark secrets of the Brisbane dating scene.

Even though we are a married family, we have tried to settle in Brisbane twice and thinking of a third time going back.
But to be honest we are thinking that it is time to try out a different area of australia.
Lots of research to be done.

Re: Anybody else struggling in Brisbane?
Thanks for your replies so far.
Seems like Melbourne wins hands-down
I do stuff in my free time, but often alone. I go to the gym and attended a rock climbing course - but my impression is that most people stick to themselves or already come in couples...
Even tried speed dating ( yes, I DID make an effort)...but - no offense - my impression was that the "remaining" single guys in their 30s were single for a reason...
I think, time to think about a move...

The people I work with aren't that bad. They have partners/wives but they are still willing to have a laugh. When I was working back in the UK nearly all of the people with families tended to not socialise that much outside of the family unit.
I've never done speed dating. I'm far too antisocial to make the effort
I'd rather just meet chicks in a friendly social environment and if there is anybody interesting enquiring further...
What I have noticed in Victoria is that there isn't the same student culture as back in the UK where people move away from their home town and become more sociable. It seems that they stay at home with their old circle of friends and don't make much of an effort to meet new people.
Backpacker hostels are usually very sociable. I'm thinking of spending a week or so as a tourist in Melbourne in one. What I find amusing about some hostels is that you find people who have been in them for months - not just transients there for a couple of days.
I'd love to know what the social scene is like in Sydney. The problem is this whole rivalry thing between Melbourne and Sydney - you can never have a discussion without it degenerating into my city is better than your city. In particular how the rock/alternative music scene is different. I haven't seen much of Sydney outside of the CBD area.
