Any single parents migrating, or migrated?
Anyone else done this on their own with children? :scared:
Interested to know how DIMIA view the whole matter... Have you experienced any problems other than those you'd normally expect?
Thanks

I'm going on my own with one daughter, now 12 years old. Like Jeremy said, Dimia don't mind one way or the other.
Knowing that I'm on my own and making all these big decisions by myself ist sometimes hard, but usually I'm quite optimistic that everything will turn out right. I have family in Canberra, that helps of course, but I'm not sure if I will settle there or somewhere else. I guess I'll go to where I find work.
How old are you're children and where are you heading?

Really cool to know I'm not the only one!
I've a daughter of 13 who's coming with me, and one of 24, staying in the UK for now, and one of 20 expecting my first Grandchild, also staying in UK.
Going out on RSMS to work at Flinders University in Adelaide, assuming a successful application. It's taken a while for the University to get things sorted for me, but I'm lucky to be following out a colleague who arrived in Adelaide today!!
I am still waiting for Flinders to submit their Nomination forms, which they tell me will happen next week. Unfortunately, I turn 45 next week as well, so it's going to have to be submitted as an exceptional post. The University and DIMIA have been encouraging, but I am worried that the fact that I took many years raising the family before starting my career may get in the way. The post is very specialised, so I'm hoping it will be okay. Will submit my application as soon as I hear from DIMIA about the outcome of the nomination.
Good luck to all. I guess it helps to have family in Australia, are the relatives in Canberra close ones?

Glad things have worked out so well for you.
You sound a like-minded soul. I guess if you are a strong unit that's the best support you can get. A little different for me, because I've still to convince the eldest two that the future for their children is better in Oz. But unless I go they will never have that insight.
Thanks so much for replying.

Poor soul, that takes incredible courage. Yes, it would be great to speak to her by e-mail.
Thanks

Give your freind my best wishes.
I am in exactly the same situation. My husband died in November leaving me with 3 children. We had just come back from our validation trip.
We had planned to move in Augist of this year and I am sticking with that plan. We are just waiting for the house to sell.
I have 3 children who are 15, 14 and 9. This move will be a fresh start for us and hopefully a better future. The kids are all enthusiastic about going even the older one who has spent some time saying she wasn't coming with us.
I truly believe that it is possible to make it on your own with the kids although it will be difficult. As someone said you just have to be strong for each other.
We don't have any family or freinds over there but we have each other and you make new friends as you move through life.
Personally I can't wait to go.
Good luck to everyone else who is going over as a single parent.
Tracey.

I'm working for the University of Adelaide (not an academic though); look me up when you get here if you like.
Good luck; it's not easy making all these big decisions on your own and then carrying them out but anyone who can cope with day to day life as a single parent can do this too!
