Question Any positive comments on secondary education (private/state) Bayside area, Brisbane?

Does anyone have any positive comments regarding secondary education?

Our eldest son is due to start an extremely good/strict catholic secondary school in September (he has also just achieved 3 5's in his KS2 SATS). This being the case we are now having a major wobble as all we seem to be reading is negative comments.

Any help/advice or general comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

Faith Lutheran, Ormiston College, Redlands College, Sheldon College are the private religious type ones and all have excellent reputations. Depends what your budget is. They have differing ethos in strictness on discipline etc but all are pretty firm and equivalent to a decent private education in UK

if you can afford the fees then you wont regret them going to one of those.

* Edit - The reason I mention religion is that the private schools that are religiously aligned get a subsidy from govt i believe . There are substantially fewer non-denominational private schools around.

I would agree. Those you mention are world class in private education standards.

Ormiston is non-denominational.
Redlands College is Redlands College
Faith Lutheran obvious
Sheldon College is non-denominational I think, and pretty strict.

Carmel is local senior catholic school. Iona is also close in wynnum.

All the schools are fairly strict, and some are very hard to get into. Policy generally is that its the pupil's responsibility for everything.

Actually all private schools are subsidised by State and Federal governments (as long as they conform to certain standards). They don't have to be associated with any religion. Church schools would also get varying amounts of cash from their churches too.

A quick point on religion and the religious schools, to emphasise how little regard to place on the religious aspect. It is something that I only noticed a few days ago.

In the 2006 census there were about 400 people that classed themselves as being in the Lutheran religion in the area.
But the local Faith Lutheran school has over 1,000 students.

Being a non church type person myself, but with a child at the Lutheran school, I feel that no real emphasis need be taken about the religious side of it unless one wants to become more involved.

With the non religious ones, if you can afford the Sheldon or Ormiston fees (about $8,000 per year), then I am sure you will have no regrets with either of those schools.

We lived on the Bayside and our eldest went to Cannon Hill Anglican College which is easy to get to by train. They worked a small miracle on her after her doing really badly in the UK. She got good enough grades to get into Uni. We were really pleased with the school and we are not religious.

Anyone know how these schools would handle a kid on the autistic spectrum?

Most of the states schools in the Bayside have special support units that will differentiate the work and offer extra support for children with special needs, not sure about the private schools though.
Check www.ourbrisbane.com. or www.redland.qld.gov.au this will give you some idea regarding education in this area.
Our daughter attends Redlands College and we are very happy with the education that she recieves.

Thanks for that. I am really after the detail such as how many support hours they would get and how in tune they are with the needs of someone whose sensory system is completely out of whack.

So far I am finding out about a lot of people who are home schooling in QLD because of the lack of support.

You could check out the Redland District Special School at Thornlands.

The ECDP also provides outreach support to students with disabilities in Prep programs at neighbouring State Primary Schools.

The school provides a wide range of programs to meet the diverse abilities of our students.

Once a child has been assessed they work out how many hours support they will get. Each special needs child gets different amounts of support hours. You will need to visit the school and speak to all the teachers (head, class and special needs) to see what they can offer your child and if it will be suitable.

The state schools with Units for ASD that I know of so far appear to be Capalaba, Cleveland, Alexandra Hills, Wynnum North. Theses schools have SEDU where they offer support via mainstream/specialist help. All the other schools take ASD kids but are only supported via the AVT (advisory visiting teachers). As for private not sure about their support strategies and to access services would cost extra over and above the fees.

Cheers
