Any new sub-divisions in Brisbane?
Hi All,
I know this question has been asked many times, but can anyone recommend any 'new' sub-divisions / suburbs in or around the bayside area of Brisbane? I am looking for an area similar to Botany Downs / Howick in Auckland. (if there are any Aucklanders reading this) I am in the early planning stages of moving the family, and like many others I only have a map of Brisbane to go by. Some local advice would be very helpful thanks.
Cheers,
ex kiwi
P.S 3 reasons why we are leaving Auckland / NZ
1. Crime
2. Education
3. Health system
All reaching 3rd world standards

Re: Any new sub-divisions in Brisbane?
G'day ex kiwi,
The answer to your query screams "Wellington Point". It's bayside and it has a lot of
new housing happening - and it's a fantastic place to live. We've been here for over
just over18 months after taking the plunge and crossing the ditch. Such a relief to
be living in a beautiful, sunny and safe place, after escaping Lower Hutt which must
currently be vying for the title of NZ's crime capital.
Wellington Point is part of the Redland Shire which also includes Ormiston,
Cleveland, Victoria Point, Mount Cotton as well as Capalaba, Alexandra Hills and
Birkdale. Fantastic area for kids, the half hour commute to the Brisbane CBD (if
that's where you end up working) is well worth it.
I've added some links below which maybe of interest:
Redland Shire Council website: http://203.21.39.66/
Redlands Tourism website: http://w-
ww.redland.net.au/redlandstourism/
Redlands Community Newspapers (Bayside Bulletin/Redland Times): http://redland.yourguide.com.au/home.asp
And a couple of really good schools:
http://www.redlands.qld.edu.au/
http://www.ormiston.qld.edu.au/
Real Estate: http://ww-
w.domain.com.au/buyer/default.asp?state=qld http://redland.propertyguide.com.au/property_search-
.asp
Hope this helps, John

Thanks John. This is exactly the information I was after. But if you don't mind, I have a few more questions:
1. Would we be eligible for the 'First Home Buyers Grant'? Although I own property in NZ (which I would sell), I have never owned in Australia.
2. Is Wellington Point a bushy type suburb ?? My wife has a spider phobia, thus we are looking for a new area with no bush.
3. Do you feel there is any kiwi bashing in Brisbane? I say this because I have just read 2 articles in the Courier Mail that have put NZers down. One being the national IQ test stating that Kiwis were at the bottom of the stats, and the other being the fraudulent claims for the 'First Home Buyers Grant' also stating Kiwis were involved.
Although Lower Hutt has a bad reputation, I'm sure most of South Auckland is worse.
Cheers again,
Dave (ex kiwi)

Best check this out with a local law or conveyancing firm when you get here. I would
say you would be eligible, since you have never owned property in Australia.

Sorry - time for a bit of a wake up call here. It doesn't matter where you live in
Australia, whether in the bush or on the 16th floor of an apartment building in the
centre of the city, from time to time you are going to have a spider encounter. All
new housing areas have large tracts of bushland running through them as part of a
revegetation/conservation initiative from the local government councils. But don't
fret - most people, I heard, who arrive in Australia with a spider phobia, usually
lose it within 12 months. After a short while you just become conditioned to them.
When we first arrived we went about the place on "seek and destroy" missions armed
with the most potent, toxic insecticides legally available. We laugh about it now.
Whenever I see a redback now I just casually swat it with my sandal - in case the
kids cop a nip - they can make you pretty ill. All other spiders round these parts,
though looking quite spectacular or menacing - depend on your degree of
arachnophobia, are quite harmless.
Wellington Point, and the Redland area does have bushy areas, as well as mangrove
wetlands. We have an abundant variety of birdlife, cockatoos, galahs, lorikeets to
name a few. Also koalas and wallabies. Also - dare I say it - snakes.

You might have to be a little thick-skinned about this. I cop the evitable sheep
jokes every day from my work mates, but it's all good fun, there's no malice - just
good-natured ribbing. It does get a little tedious at times, but keep a smile on your
face and comeback with an equally amusing or witty reply. Aussies are great sorts,
really. We have made so many, many good friends since we've been here.

Have a look at this link:
http://www.firsthome.gov.au/
which states in part: "Eligible applicants must be natural persons, who are
Australian citizens or permanent residents, who are buying or building their first
home in Australia." So clearly from what is stated here you would be eligible for
your first home in Australia.

What about if you're "Unnatural", or perhaps "Super-natural"? Damn - shouldn't have
mentioned: Occupation: Male Witch, on that visa application!
