Townsville

Townsville is a coastal city in North Queensland, so it's in the tropics and an awful long way from Brisbane. It has about 100,000 people.
I found it to be the hottest place I visited in Aus, and by all accounts it reaches extraordinarily high temperatures on a regular basis. Mind you, I didn't go to the Top End. So if you like it hot and I mean HOT, then it might be for you. Plus the Great Barrier Reef is on your door step.
I met lots of nice folks there and rather liked the central drag where crowds of people strolled in the evenings when it cooled down. All very civilised.
Hope that helps a bit.
