Default Any benefit in joining ACS

Hi,

With my assessment from ACS I received a membership application form to join ACS (expensive....)

I just wonder if a membership in the ACS is (generally) recognised as anything positive by employers in Australia, when it comes to choosing who'll get the job or not?

I know this might seem to be a "how long is a string" question, but I'm comparing how it is here in Sweden, where nobody cares if you are a member of ACS equivalent (Swedish info processing society) or not.

Maybe ACS has a higher regard in Australia (showing professional integrity and competence, as it says on their homepage)? Hence my question if a membership in the ACS will be a merit when it comes to looking for a job in Australia?

In my opinion there is no benefit at all. The ACS consists of a bunch of academics who like to get together and talk shop. That's it.

I Also got the letter. So I joined.

But Take Note.

When I applied for migration I sent them All my degreee stuff (4 years of transcript and degree certificate). I also included 5 years of IT work experience, just incase.

Got a positive assessment back, they only assessed my degree (Software Engineering) and not my work experience. No Worries I thought.

When I applied to become a member of ACS, with the application they included in my assessment letter. I sent them my A$350 (or was it $300) anyway they managed to get some more money out of me. When I got the congratulations your now a member os the ACS at the level off Associate, I was Pi$$ed. I just sent them some more cash and they didn't even bother there arse to check my work experience. If they had checked my work experience, which I sent in the original migration application they would have seen that I qualify for Member level.

A quick e-mail to ACS and my level was going to be reassessed. As of yesterday (17th September) I'm now a member at level member of the ACS.

So make sure you check your level, if your in the same boat as me.

Also benefits are not that great. If you like lots of presentations then your onto a winner. You can attend a good few of them for no payment. Non members have to pay A$200+ for them.

Other benefits are Amex Card fee free for first year (wow),

Health Insurance it's about as expensive as you can get walking in to any medical insurance company.

Qantas Club membership at $450 per year. I currently pay $100 per year for qantas club membership. SO unless you drink a lot of beer/wine or food (nibble) it's dam expensive. I think I managed to drink over A$100 of beer in the first few weeks of this year at Canberra Qantas Club.

Other than that there are no real benefits.

The only reason why I took it out, was just incase DIMA upped the requirements for IT Skilled and I thought being a member of ACS wouldn't do me any harm.
