Many Australians do actually use their 4x4- generally they camp far more than most Brits will ever do.

So.....my tip is go for it unless you live in Toorak, and avoid the bigger petrol models stick to diesel.

Some people need the big ones for towing horse boxes and/or trailers.

I have a small 4x4 dual cab ute, its footprint is not much bigger than a Ford or Holden wagon and I can see further from it.
So many parts of Australia are only accessible with a 4x4. Over Christmas we went to some beaches at Cape Lord Howe that you can only get to in a 4x4. One was literally stunning. Could never have seen it without a 4wd. Just the fact that you can drive on a beach does it for me. Means you can take all your gear with you and can spend the whole day there. 4x4s are better on gravel/dirt roads and there are plenty of those here!

I live on one. I love my 4x4 ute. I was hauling wood I chainsawed on a mates property today. Going back at Easter for more - but there's a lot there for the taking.

Thanks Ray2gill for the back up, It is true Freelanders have had alot of major problems, mine has not... perhaps I am lucky, but dont knock all Landrovers, surely the Disco and especially the Defender throw some weight....

Hey mate we do the school run in toorak! But still need a 4x4 for towing the boat, camping in the bush, visiting friends farms, ski season etc. We use a car for the school run though (amongest the X5's and range rovers sits our little Camry)

Just got a Grande Prado (Diesel as you suggested) and no I did not put bull bars on it (yet).

Its only the Freelanders that are crap. My brother creams himself everytime he sees a disco and a defender, he is beside himself.

Intersting head to head between Territory, Pathfinder, Prado and Disco here.

Concluding paragraph:
The vehicle that does it all is the Discovery 3 - space, refinement, technology, ease of use, and comfort. These factors make up for the fact that the engine is old and thirsty. None of these four are particularly economical and if fuel efficiency is a factor in your choice you should look at the diesel variants of these vehicles although there isn't one offered in Territory. When you look at the equipment levels in the Discovery compared with the competition it's a winner. A Prado VX would be a close second but not if you want to carry passengers in the third row seat.

The new Discovery is great. The problem for Landrover is that previous medels have been rubbish and it will take time to break down this legacy. If I was in the market for a 4x4 in this class I would go for the diesel Discovery.

please remember some times it is better to be quite and appear an idiot rather than make a noise and remove all doubt ... the disco as been the best "luxury" 4x4 while the defender as been the best avail work horse since god was a boy to say the previous models are rubbish is just pure spite or ignorance rover as been setting the standard since dot (jmo of course)
