Default Another tax question - Courses & training?

Can anybody tell me if a self-funded work related training course counts as a tax deductible or tax refundable?

I am about to enrol in a course, but now work have offered to pay for it on my behalf. Tax wise, would I be better off paying myself, or allowing work to pay for it?

I've tried ringing a couple of tax agents, but they seem unwilling to discuss it until after the tax year, when it will be too late to enrol on the course!

Any clues?
