Cool Another suburb query [for a family of 3]

Me, husband and 3 year old son would be migrating to Sydney next year.Yipeee!
We don't have friends there, hence we'd be staying in a hotel for a week after arriving.
As of now, we're looking up suburbs around sydney that we'd probably stay in during our 'adjustment period'.
But we'd like to narrow down our search...please help us guys!
These are our criteria:
- less than an hour from the CBD [supposing we'll work in the CBD, we'd have to leave our son at the daycare, and so we have to be home early to fetch him]
- accessible by train/bus [we probably won't be buying a car immediately, maybe after a few months]
- near shops/grocery stores
- with good primary schools [i think most suburbs have this]
- good, safe, family-friendly neighborhood
- maximum budget is 350AUD [i think a 1 bedroom flat/unit will suffice since our son sleeps with us]

I've read the suburb profiles from a site..www.cityhobo.com
and i'm keen on Artarmon, Lane Cove and North Ryde [not sure if these will be near the train stations when the Epping-Chatswood line is completed].
These are quite on the expensive side though, but they look good in the pics

Much thanks for the help!
