Default Another Potential Career Changer - Lawyer

Hello Everyone,

Hope you're all OK as I've been offline for a while.

I've been thinking of a career change when I get to Oz. One option is Law. I have a UK LLB. Apparently I need my degree assessed do some conversion courses and then do a Legal Practice Course.

If anyone has ever done this, can they advise how many conversion courses are generally required and how much this cost you?

Thanks,

Paul.

Depends where in Aus you're thinking of going....Where did you do your degree? I'm a solicitor and have a degree in Law from Oxford - the Legal Practice Board in WA said I'd have to do 7 exams and then work as a trainee for a year before they'd admit me there. No thanks very much!! Don't like being a lawyer very much anyway

I did it in Cardiff. I've been looking at Queensland. I was thinking that if it was 3 or so courses plus an LPC, then I may give it a go, but 7 sounds alot right now. Having said that, I'm an Accountant and to convert to Oz, it's gonna take about 7 courses too.

Are you in Oz in Law or the UK?

Paul.

In the UK still. Sigh! Queensland may well be easier than WA. Certainly, as an English solicitor, currently I can be conditionally admitted in Qld and I have a certificate to say that I'm eligible for conditional admission. Shame we don't want to go to Qld.....You can always contact their Legal Practice Board if you want to check it out with them - I've got their email addy somewhere in my pile of Aus bumpf if you want it.

Ironically I'm looking to get out of Law if we get to Aus. Don't think I'll go for Accountancy tho!

Seven exams for an accountant to convert sounds like a lot. What UK body do you belong to?

Unlike law, accountancy in Australia is not generally regulated (at least for most specialisms) so many UK accountants migrating never need to join an Australian professional body. UK qualifications in themselves are usually well regarded, especially in the major cities.

Jeremy,

That's the tax and company law courses, plus the full ICAA program.

However, unless I go into practice, I probably won't bother either.
